ANNOUNCEMENTS Air Force Airman David McCune graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. He is the son of Mike McCune of Fishdock Road, Homer, Alaska. McCune is a 2008 graduate of Homer High School. Homer Middle School is currently seeking a girls’ soccer coach for the middle school soccer season. The season dates are from Aug. 25 through Oct. 3. Omicron Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, a group of women educators, is again sponsoring a Back to School Project to benefit families in need. All school supplies collected will be distributed to families using the Homer Food Pantry. Last year, 46 families with 113 children benefited from the generosity of Homer. Please help the children of our community by placing school supplies in the receptacle at Ulmers. The Homer Boys and Girls Club will open its doors for the After School Program on Monday, Aug. 31. Krispy Kreme Fundraiser: Kachemak Kids Early Learning Center, a nonprofit child care and preschool center in Homer, will be selling Krispy Kreme Doughnuts as a fundraiser to help support affordable, quality child care in Homer. Doughnuts are $12/dozen. Payment is due with pre-order. Doughnuts will be delivered to local businesses and residences within the Homer City Limits on Friday, Aug. 21. The Kenai Peninsula State Fair is coming up soon August 21, 22 & 23. Hours on Friday and Saturday are from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Hours on Sunday are from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The theme is “50 Reasons to Shine in 2009.” Family Day is back! On Friday from 10a.m. to 4p.m. the entire family gets in for $20 and 3 cans of food. The Fair offers a wonderful opportunity for all community members, from the very young to the “mature” to share their talents and interests with others on the Peninsula. The fair offers 24 departments to enter items in to display what you have produced, created, grown or raised. Exhibiting at the Fair is free and you will be rewarded by seeing your items at the Fair as well as with ribbons for each entry and premium moneys will be paid for all exhibits that place 1st, 2nd & 3rd. Thursday, August 20 from noon to 7 p.m. is the regular entry time at the Fairgrounds in Ninilchik. If you are not able to come to the regular entry day we will be offering an Exhibit drop off in Soldotna on August 17, 10 – 2 p.m. at the Alaska Cooperative Extension Office, 43961 K-Beach Rd, Suite A. SENIORS The Friendship Center Adult Day Services is located in the Homer Senior campus. Hours are 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., five days a week. Hours may be extended to meet needs. Days are filled with a variety of music, crafts, outings, games and socializing. Call 235-2295 for more information. Anchor Point Senior dinners are 5:30 p.m. Thursdays at the Anchor Point Senior Center. Bingo is Fridays at 7 p.m. “Keep it Moving” exercise classes are offered on Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m., 11:10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. at Friendship Terrace. Homer Senior Citizens has a community Medicare volunteer to assist Medicare clients and answer questions. Call 235-7655 to make an appointment. PRATT MUSEUM Summer hours: Daily 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Fish Feedings every Tuesday and Friday at 4 p.m. The Pratt Museum seeks work for its outdoor art exhibit, “Facing the Elements,” located along the forest trail behind the museum. This exhibition is completely open to the elements and offers artists the natural surroundings as a unique backdrop. Kachemak Bay: An Exploration of People and Place. This innovative exhibit is a complete redesign of the Pratt’s main galleries, with Phase I completed in 2004. Community-based videos, photo essays, computer interactives, and visitor-controlled remote video technology take visitors beyond the museum walls to historic and contemporary life around Kachemak Bay, providing an intimate means of understanding people and place. LIVE Remote Wildlife Cameras: View the seabird rookery at Gull Island live via remote camera. The SeeBird Cam is visitor-controlled and always on.
