Two weeks ago, Homer High School Basketball Coach Mark Casseri had his abbreviated Mariner Varsity team adventuring in Nome, hiking the tundra in subzero temperatures.
“We all had a great time,” Casseri said. “It was a great way for our older players to do a little bonding.”
Certainly it was a trip they will remember for many years to come.
Last weekend, Casseri took his young men to the Valley to face the Colony Knights and Palmer Moose. And while the outcome wasn’t particularly favorable — Homer lost both games and had a long, cold bus ride home — the weekend wasn’t all bad.
Friday saw the return of 6-foot, 8-inch Devon Kennelty, who had surgery on his foot following an injury early in the season. This was Kennelty’s first game as a senior, and he quickly established a strong Mariner presence inside.
“Devon was finally able to get some playing time in. His balance is still off a bit, but it’s hard to know whether that’s a muscle issue or a trust factor,” Casseri said. “His teammates are starting to look for him underneath again, so that’s good.”
Despite the double-digit deficit on the scoreboard at the end of the game, Casseri said he was happy with his Mariners’ performance.
He was about to get a lot happier.
On Saturday, Homer squared off against a physical Palmer team, and proved they could hold their own.
“We actually showed signs of brilliance against Palmer,” Casseri said. The Mariners and Moose battled head-to-head, with Homer erasing a 7-point deficit at the half to tie things up in the fourth quarter.
“They ended up winning the game at the free throw line,” Casseri said. “We had to foul to stop the clock, and they made their free throws. It was a tough one to lose, but our guys played a terrific game.”
Casseri said the team expected Palmer to be more physical.
“And they were,” he said. “They were banging the boards pretty hard, but Devon stayed in there, fighting them off and pulling down rebounds.”
Kennelty has beefed up a bit during rehab. Casseri says it is all muscle.
“He’s in good shape; pretty solid,” he said of Kennelty. “With the foot, I would say he is probably close to 80 percent.”
Casseri is quick to point out, however, that his Mariners are all about team, and not individual.
“They each bring a strength,” he explained. “Dyllan Day has consistently scored in double figures, and I can’t think of anyone I would want on my side, going into battle, more than Ryan Cotney.”
Casseri also commented on the work ethic of Konstantine Reutov.
“I can show him some new defense I want to work on in practice, and he always says, “I’ll do my best, Coach,’” Casseri said. “They all work tremendously hard.”
Homer’s basketball team will compete in the Seward Invitational this weekend, before returning to host East, Grace and Seldovia for the Homer Winter Carnival Tournament Feb. 9-11.
“Things are starting to come together for us, and this is about the time we want to peak,” he said. “These young men are finally starting to believe that they really can compete with anyone.”
Bring on Regions.

However, Sanarov wasn’t quite finished with the puck just yet. Less than three minutes into the third period, Matveev assisted Sanarov with Homer’s second goal.
Homer skated hard in the third, defending against a Kenai assault, and quashing the Kards on a power play. The team heads to Regions this weekend, where they are seeded sixth.

The Homer Mariner cross country ski team competed in the Colony Invitational
on Friday, with the Lady Mariner squad finishing second overall.
Homer’s Marie Schmidt made a strong showing with a third-place finish, while the Mariner men’s team finished seventh, feeling the absence of upperclassmen Andre Lovett and Parker Sorenson, who were plagued with illness and injury.
Saturday’s race was canceled due to extreme cold.
Homer Boys: 11. Brian Rowe, 26:23; 28. Ghen Sasakura, 28:51; 35. Kyle Wentz, 30:53; 40. Josh Vantrease, 31:39.
Homer Girls: 3. Marie Schmidt, 23:49; 6. Kaya Morelli, 24:41; 10. Cassidy Soistman, 25:25. 11. Mady Gerard, 25:46; 27. Alaine Miller, 27:53; 29. Emily Schmidt, 28:07; Katie Schmidt, 30:13.

Husky grapplers take on Nikiski
Six members of the Homer Middle School Wrestling team traveled to Nikiski over the weekend, with all Husky wrestlers placing in the top four of their weight classes. Five made it to the finals.
Eighth-grader Jadzia Martin was awarded the title of “Outstanding Wrestler” by officials after she won all three of her matches and took first place overall in the combined 90-95 pound weight class. Martin was the only girl of five to make the finals of the tourney.
The Huskies travel to Chapman on Saturday, with the wrestling getting underway at 10 a.m.

The ‘real’ results of the Rumble
Contrary to last week’s story on the Nikolaevsk Warrior Rumble, the Warrior varsity boys’ team placed first overall, while the girls’ team finished second. Both Nikolaevsk teams earned the sportsmanship award, while Andre Tipikin won the free throw competition with 16 baskets. Nikolaevsk’s Eric Mametieff took the top spot in the 3-pointer competition, sinking 10 from outside the arc.
Warriors named to the All-Tournament Team include: Nianiella Dorvall, Sophia Kalugin, Kilina Klaich, Blake Klaich, Eric Mametieff and Andre Tipikin.

After logging a few wins on the road last week, the Homer Hockey Team struggled to score against Wasilla, falling 0-5 in conference play. Five different Wasilla players were able to push the puck past Homer goalie Alex Sanarov for the shutout on Friday. The Warriors outshot Homer 44-9 in the game. The Mariners look to pick up a few more goals this weekend as they travel to face Soldotna on Thursday, and return home to face Kenai on Saturday for Senior Night.

Huskies lose grip on rubber chicken
The first middle school wrestling tournament of the season got underway in Soldotna this weekend, pitting junior grapplers from across the peninsula against each other for the Rubber Chicken Classic. (Instead of winning a medal or ribbon, the champion takes home a rubber chicken.)
Seventh-grader Corey Bice, wrestling at 95 pounds, was winning 6-5 going into the third period before getting reversed and put to his back by Soldotna’s Atom Skiba. Jaime Rios, also a seventh-grader at 105 pounds, pinned his way into the finals before losing to a tough Soldotna eighth-grader Jesse Littrell, 14-0.
“We were impressed with his effort,” said Coach Chris Perk. “He never gave up and didn’t get pinned.”
Kyle Johnson, 8th grade and 138 pounds, was only down 0-4 in the second period, when Nikiski’s Rory Hoeldt horsed Johnson to his back and won by fall.
The Huskies’ final chance for a chicken rested on the shoulders of eighth- grader Jared Gee, who weighs in at 212 pounds. His opponent, however, weighed 270 and was about five inches taller. Kenai’s Abe Bartlett scored a quick pin against Gee via a head-and-arm move. The team heads to Nikiski this weekend.

‘Hey all you Mariner fans …’
Homer High School’s Cheer Squad will host a Cheer Camp on Feb. 3 and 4 in Alice Witte Gymnasium at Homer High School. The two-day fundraiser for the Mariner Squad is open to both boys and girls, and is offered to students in grades 3-8. Campers will learn a dance routine, a cheer, and participate in skills competition.
Registration for camp begins at 12:30 p.m. Friday at the Homer High Commons. Parents must be present at registration in order to sign a release. The first cheers will then fill the gym at 1 p.m., and continue until 4 p.m. Saturday’s 9 a.m. to noon session will include a presentation of awards, as well as a performance for parents at 11 a.m. Cost of the camp is $35, and includes a camp souvenir. For more information, contact Anna Fisher at 235-4640, or afisher@kpbsd.k12.ak.us.

Homer represents at Besh Cup
Homer area skiers made an impressive showing at this year’s Besh Cup races at Lookout Mountain Trails over the weekend. Hosted by Kachemak Nordic Ski Club, Saturday’s sprint race saw Homer’s Jasmine Maurer and Megan Spurkland place 29th and 30th respectively in the Junior 1 and Older Women’s category. In the J1 and Older Men’s competition, Mariner skier Andre Lovett was the highest Homer finisher at 33rd place, followed by Parker Sorenson in 34th, Brian Rowe, 40th and Dan Adickes, 46th. Atz Kilcher finished 70th, with Alan Parks coming in at 72nd.
In the J2 Female race, Cassidy Soistman placed 11th and Mady Gerard took 17th.
In Sunday’s interval start, free technique, Lovett moved up to 26th place. Louis Maurer finished 52nd and Kyle Wentz came in at 62nd.
For the women, Kaya Morelli finished 42nd, Marie Schmidt was 43rd, Cassidy Soistman, 51st, and Mady Gerard, 58th. Rounding things out for Homer’s contingent were Alaine Miller at 61st place, Emily Schmidt, 64th and Katie Schmidt, 70th.

The Warriors hosted Nenana, Fort Yukon and Tri-Valley in three days of round-robin play.
“I was thrilled with the play of our boys team,” said Head Coach Steve Klaich. “The defensive intensity and rebounding are improving daily, and the offense is becoming more consistent with fewer turnovers.”
Because of injuries, the 7-2 Warrior boys team is currently made up of very few upperclassmen — and a number of eighth-graders.
“Our older guys, like Eric Mametieff, Andre Tipikin and Blake Klaich had a fantastic tournament,” Klaich said. “But the younger athletes are stepping up more and more and making valuable contributions.”
Things look surprisingly familiar on the girls side of the action.
“I have one junior, three sophomores, one freshman and six eighth-graders on the team,” said Lady Warrior Head Coach Bea Klaich. “We are very young and lack experience, but the girls have great attitudes, are very teachable and are working hard.”
Klaich said her team was most excited about playing Fort Yukon at the tournament because of senior scoring sensation Kandace Carroll.

“Kandace has a reputation for consistently scoring 40 to 50 points in a game,” she said. “Our girls were up for the challenge of playing her, and held her to 25 points.”
In Friday’s game against Nenana, Nikolaevsk overcame a 12-point deficit at the half to pick up a 38-35 win.
“I have a lot of girls getting into the scoring column, which makes it nice,” Bea Klaich said. “The girls don’t care who scores the points, as long as we come out with the ‘W.’”
Lady Warrior Nianiella Dorvall rallied for 11 points in the fourth quarter to lead the team. She had a total of 15 points in the game.
The Nikolaevsk boys found themselves in a similar situation against Nenana. Leading by a single point at the half, the Warriors outscored the Lynx 21-11 in the third quarter. They picked up the win with a final score of 63-50.
Andre Tipikin led the Warrior team — and the game — with 30 points.
Things against Tri-Valley in the championship games didn’t go quite as well.
“We were definitely challenged by their 6-foot, 6 dominant post player, “ Steve Klaich said of his Warriors. “We did a good job of swarming him and held him to 10 points. He scored 41 in his game against Nenana.” Klaich said his team’s success was a group effort, doing an “adequate” job closing out on the perimeter shooters.
In the girls’ game against Tri-Valley, Serafima Kalugin and Kalina Klaich combined for 23 points in the 38-45 losing effort.
“That game gave me the opportunity to get all 11 girls on the team rotated through,” Bea Klaich said. “With such young players, it’s important to try to give as many girls court time as possible to gain experience.”
Both Warrior teams take on Seldovia tomorrow, before heading up to the Nenana Tournament on Feb. 2-4.
“Our team is currently dealing with injuries and we look at this situation as an opportunity for the younger players to get experience,” Steve Klaich explained. “If our team is healthy and at full strength (nine players) we should be a competitive team come Peninsula Conference Tournament time.”

After spending some time watching the Homer Winter Jamboree Women’s Hockey Tournament over the weekend, I’ve determined there is a significant difference between men’s and women’s hockey.
Men’s hockey is all about speed, testosterone and burning through copious amounts of adrenaline. Women play the game with a little more style, finesse and imagination.
Men rely on hard-hitting, ice-crunching body checks, while women use more intelligence and creativity, often adding a little flair to a pass, or toe-point to a shot on goal.
The breathing space around the women’s bench during a game is downright refreshing in comparison to the fetid odors that hang in the air when the guys are playing. I wonder how often high school hockey gear gets washed?
You can actually see a goal being scored in women’s hockey. Let’s face it, everything happens so fast in men’s hockey, some of us just wait until we hear everyone else cheer before we join in.
And, it seems relatively safe to say that male hockey players don’t generally apologize to each other for not passing the puck.
But don’t make the mistake of confusing politeness with any lack of competitiveness. These women mean business.
The six-team jamboree style tournament at Kevin Bell Arena featured women from Anchorage, Wasilla, Palmer, Kenai and Soldotna in three days of hockey action.
“All of the women were mixed up into six different teams,” said Homer Team Manager Gird Harrald. “That way, everyone got the opportunity to play with a group of women they hadn’t played with before.”
Each of the six teams played four games, with the two top teams playing for the championship title on Sunday. After the ice fog cleared, the final face-off was set: Team 6, “We like to Shoot it, Shoot it,” sponsored by the Grog Shop and bringing a 3-1-0 record versus Team 4, with a record of 3-1, “Defense is a Girl’s Best Friend,” sponsored by Beluga Lake Lodge.
The two teams came face to face at high noon on Sunday to battle it out for the title. “Defense” took a quick lead with a breakaway goal by Kristen Brown in the first few minutes of the game. “Shoot it” answered almost halfway through the first period when Karyn Noyes found the back of the net off a Brook Ames assist.
But “Shoot it” was just getting warmed up — and shoot it they certainly did. By the end of the first period, “Shoot it” was up 3-1 following two more goals by Danelle Winn and Barb Malchick. Deb Mosely added another goal in the second period to put her team ahead for the remainder of the game. “Defense” rallied back for another goal during third period by Jessi Dullinger, bringing the final score to 4-1 in favor of “Shoot it.”

Homer hockey traveled north over the weekend to wage a frigid fight on the ice against teams from North Pole and Hutchison. The team was originally scheduled to play Delta on the road trip as well, but the game was canceled due to the cold.
“I was so sad when they canceled the Delta game,” said Mariner Hannah Baird. “I was honestly extremely excited to play in -45 degree weather. No doubt we would have been frozen solid by the end of the game, but it would have been extremely cool to be able to tell people about it.”
Baird would have to settle for two solid Homer wins, as the M’s defeated North Pole 3-2 on Thursday, and Hutchison 4-0 on Friday.
Tommy Bowe scored two goals against North Pole, while Mark Reutov added one. Kiril Sanarov assisted on all three goals, and Alex Sanarov picked up the win in net for Homer, which outshot North Pole 31-10. Things looked a bit bleaker against Hutchison, as Homer held onto a marginal one-goal lead with three minutes to play in the game. Then, they came alive, dominating the final minutes of the match-up.
Bowe had a pair of goals on assists from Mark Reutov, and Konstantin Reutov also scored on assists from Kai Simmons and Hannah Baird. Dennis Sanarov pushed the M’s to the 4-0 win with an unassisted final goal. Homer hammered Hutch with 28 shots on goal, while Mariner goalkeeper Alex Sanarov turned away 20 shots for the shutout.
“I was pretty lucky to have notched the four goals in two games, because it could have been anyone on the team,” Bowe said of his scoring.
He added that the team had been practicing all week on set plays, and two of his goals over the weekend were off a classic give-and-go play out of the corner.
“None of them were great shots,” he explained. “I just got some really good passes to set me up.”
Bowe said he feels the M’s are improving as a team.
“This week, we were missing two of our top players, and freshmen were forced to step up and perform,” he explained. “They did.”
Homer heads north again this weekend, to take on Colony, Wasilla and Palmer.

Homer boys finished second in the team standings, with Lovett placing fourth, Sorenson sixth and Brian Rowe seventh.
“We were all ready to get SoHi back on Saturday’s race,” Sorenson said. “They canceled it five minutes before we were supposed to start.”
Lovett said the warmest he heard it got was -15 at the starting line at the peak of the day.
And then the temperature just started dropping again.
“We were disappointed, but I think it was the right thing to cancel it,” Lovett said. “When it’s that cold and you’re sprinting in a 1k race, you’re breathing so hard and fast, the cold air ‘frosts’ your lungs.”
And frostbitten lungs apparently come with some major repercussions down the road.
This weekend is jam-packed with ski action, as the Mariners travel back to Soldotna on Friday for the Skyview Invitational skate ski relay. On Saturday, skiers will compete in a 1k classic sprint at the hayfields on Ohlson Mountain for the Besh Cup. They return to the hayfields on Sunday to finish out with a 10k skate race.
