M's score 5 times in third period of 8-2 rout of Kards
The Homer Mariners reeled off five goals in the final 15 minutes of play on Saturday, and rolled to an easy 8-2 victory over the Kenai Central Cardinals in a key North Star Conference showdown at the Kenai Multi-Purpose Facility. Overall, Homer scored six of the final eight goals in the game.
The Mariners, who are off until their Jan. 11 showdown in Wasilla, got off to a quick start against the Cardinals. Isaiah Nevak turned a pass from Ethan Pitzman into the game's first goal early in the first period. Tyler Gilliland slipped another shot past Kenai's Josh Tree to send the Mariners into the second period with a 2-0 mark.
Lee Lowe picked up the assist on Gilliland's first-period score.
Homer stretched its advantage to 3-0 late in the second, when J.J. Williamson scored an unassisted goal at the 14:46 mark.
The wheels came off Kenai's wagon for good from there. Lee Lowe, Phin Weston, Alden Ross, Pitzman and Nevak all notched goals in the third period and helped the Mariners salt away their 11th-straight win.
Hunter Warren starred in the net for Homer. He stopped 20 of the Cardinals' 22 shots in the contest.
