November 16th | Staff Report
The Grace Christian Grizzlies and Nikiski Lady Bulldogs came up short in their bid to bring the state volleyball title to the Southcentral Conference this past weekend. Both teams suffered tough losses at the Class 3A ASAA/First National Bank Alaska State Volleyball Championships in Anchorage.
Grace Christian finished third in the final standings. The Lady Grizzlies finished at 2-2 overall, including a five-set loss to Barrow in the consolation semifinals. Grace Christian's only other loss of the tournament came in the semifinals of the winners' bracket against eventual state champion Valdez.
The Lady Grizzlies, the SCC tournament champion, opened the tournament with a first-round win over Kotzebue. From there, they dispatched Sitka and earned a berth in the semifinals against Valdez.
After falling to Valdez, which was seeking its second state title in three years, the Lady Grizzlies dropped a tough decision to Barrow in the consolation semifinals. The Lady Whalers had won three straight games en route to earning a spot against the Lady Grizzlies in the loser's bracket of the double-elimination tournament.
Nikiski, which had posted a 12-0 record in conference play during the regular season, made an early exit from the tournament. The Lady Bulldogs suffered a 3-0 loss to Valdez in their opening bout. They then lost their consolation opener to Barrow.
