Davis, Fasulo carry M's to 9th at Bartlett

Jacob Davis and Luciano Fasulo both sprinted their way to top 25 finishes on Saturday in Anchorage and helped spur the Homer Mariners to ninth at the 2017 Bartlett State Preview meet. More than 35 teams from throughout the state competed in the 5-kilometer race.

Sparked by Davis and Fasulo, the Mariners scored just 226 points in the meet - the third-best mark among Class 3A programs. Only Anchorage Christian and Grace Christian finished higher than the Mariners in the final standings, placing fifth and seventh, respectively.

Davis highlighted a list of seven Homer runners to compete in the meet with a solid showing. He raced his way to 13th in the final boys' standings by turning in a time of 16 minutes and 57 seconds.

Fasulo finished 22nd in the standings with a time of 17:24.

Jordan Beachy was the third HHS runner to crack the top 30. His time of 17:39 was good enough to land him in 30th.

Bill Rich, Clayton Beachy also did well. In a meet that featured more than 140 runners, he finished 81st with a time of 18:42. Beachy was 87th at 18:55.

Mose Hayes and Andy Super also did well, Hayes checked in at No. 103 with a final mark of 19:23. Super was 139th at 21:51.

Anchorage Christian's Blake Bennett won the boys' top honor. He turned in a blistering time of 15:59. His winning time was 15 seconds faster that Dimond's Sebastian Prosser, who finished second at 16:14.

Dimond won the boys' team title with 77 points. West Valley was second at 87.

The Mariners will join Kodiak and East Anchorage in a three-team meet on Sept. 1 in Kodiak.

Lady M's take 6th at Pritchard tourney

The Homer High School Lady Mariners nailed down a sixth-place finish at the 2017 Shayna Pritchard Memorial Volleyball Tournament on Saturday in Nikiski. Homer fell to sixth following a narrow loss to Kenai Central in the fifth-place game.

Marina Carroll highlighted the HHS outing. She was selected to the all-tournament roster. Homer, which traveled to Kenai Central on Aug. 29, will make its next outing on Sept. 7 in Big Lake when they face Houston.
