Football players from Homer, Voznesenka will start on July 26
High school athletes from throughout the state will return to action next month when preparations for the 2017-18 school year get under way.
Football players from Homer and Voznesenka will take to the field for their first day of practice on July 26. Teams will participate in preseason drills through Aug. 9, and can begin their seasons on Aug. 10.
Homer and Voznesenka compete in the small-school division's Peninsula Conference along with Seward, Redington and Nikiski.
Homer will be looking to wipe away the memories of a tough 2016 campaign this fall. A year ago, the Mariners struggled to a 2-6 record, including an 0-3 mark in conference action. Voznesenka, on the other hand, will try and take the next step for their program. Despite posting a 1-6 record, the Cougars finshed third in the conference race with a 1-3 mark and narrowly missed the playoffs.
The small-school state football playoffs will begin on Oct. 7 with the top finisher in the Peninsula and Aurora conference facing the second-place team from the other conference. The state championship game will be played on Oct. 14.
Joining the area's football athletes in preseason drills will be cross country runners from Homer, Voznesenka and Nikolaevsk.
The state cross country meet will be held Sept. 30 in Anchorage.
