Will snow increase spark more interest in skiing?

Homer High School Nordic skiers ended their season Saturday with strong finishes at the State Cross-Country Ski Championships at Kincaid Park in Anchorage. In Friday's 7.5-kilometer race, Katia Holmes placed highest for the Lady Mariners at 44th. Holmes finished the race in 20 minutes, 40.7 seconds, with teammate Katie Davis on her heels in 46th place. Davis finished in 21:12.8.
Junior Jacob Davis led the way for the Homer boys, completing the longer 10k race in 27:49.1. That was good enough for a 48th-place finish, with Tadhg Scholz coming in at 54th.
Davis said ski conditions were — and have been — amazing.
"It's been such a great season for snow and we certainly are enjoying it," Davis said. "The (ski) teams have been getting smaller and smaller — especially ours. It's been a hard couple of years for skiing."
Davis said he thinks the lack of decent snow over the past few years is not the only thing that has contributed to the decrease in cross-country ski participation; but it hasn't helped.
"Skiing is one of those sports that relies on many different bits and pieces — like trails, snow, lots of equipment, waxing, technique, etc.," he explained. "It all requires a lot of support and dedication. So, the lack of snow for many — especially newcomers — just becomes too much."
Saturday's final race of the season offered a mixed-technique relay, where the first two legs are skied classic style, and the last two freestyle. Both Mariner boys and girls teams finished 13th overall in the relay competition.
Despite having a smaller team this year, Davis said the season has been a lot of fun, and he's looking forward to next year.
"I just hope we are able to spark some lasting interest in skiing," he said.
