Homer basketball struggles at Grace Christian

After falling to Grace Christian School on Thursday, both Homer boys and girls teams struggled to bounce back for Friday's home match-up against Anchorage Christian Schools.

The Mariner boys did their best to hold off the Lions, but couldn't crawl back up from their 10-point halftime deficit and fell 62-53. Koby Etzwiler scored 24 points to lead the M's — half of them off 3-pointers. He also shot 6 for 6 from the free-throw line.

Jordan Beachy picked up nine points for Homer, while Charles Rohr added six.

In girls' action, the Lady M's continued to struggle putting the ball in the basket — and had a fair amount of trouble with the ACS full-court press. After falling behind 3-18 after the first quarter, Homer scored three points in the second quarter, and trailed by 27 points at the half.

After a closer, but no-less-productive second half, the Lady Mariners fell 18-46.

Rylee Doughty led the score for Homer with six points. Senior Uliana Reutov added five.

The Mariners traveled to Soldotna for endowment games Tuesday evening, but results were not available by Homer Tribune press time. This weekend, both boys and girls squads head north to take on the Houston Hawks Friday and meet ACS again on Saturday. Varsity games start at 6 and 7:30 p.m. on Friday, and 3 and 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

Conference championships start March 9 in Nikiski.
