Lady Mariner scoring woes continue in 27-36 loss
Mariner junior Koby Etzwiler scored 23 points to lead his Homer High School varsity basketball team to a 53-38 win over the visiting Seward Seahawks on Saturday.
The M's jumped out to a quick 14-5 lead in the first quarter, thanks in part to 4 for 5 shooting at the free throw line by junior Charles Rohr. Homer took a 24-19 advantage into the half, before Etzwiler widened the Seahawk deficit to 12 points, scoring 10 of Homer's 14 third-quarter points to lead his Mariners to the easy win.
Rohr scored 14 points in the win, while senior Hunter Edens added eight. The Mariners sank five 3-pointers in the game, three coming from Etzwiler, and two from Edens.
In girls' action, the Lady M's again struggled to get their shots to fall, scoring in single digits in all four quarters to fall 27-36 to the Lady Seahawks. Seward took control early in the game with a 17-7 run in the first quarter. Homer was able to tighten their defense for the next three quarters, allowing Seward only 19 points for the remainder of the game.
But the Lady Mariners were only able to muster 20 points in the final three quarters, unable to make up for the 10-point deficit in the first quarter.
Rylyn Todd led the scoring for Homer with eight points, followed by Marina Carroll and Uliana Reutov, who each added six. The Lady M's shot 5 for 8 from the charity stripe and no 3-pointers.
This weekend, Homer teams travel north to face the Redington Huskies on Friday night. Varsity game times are 6 p.m. for the girls, and 7:30 p.m. for the boys.
