Around 6:15 p.m. Friday, the Coast Guard responded to a 45-foot fishing vessel capsized in Port Valdez. All four crew members of the F/V Elohim, a seiner homeported in Homer, were rescued and no injuries reported.
No pollution related to the incident has been reported, however the Elohim’s owner deployed boom around the vessel as a precautionary measure, as the vessel has a fuel capacity of approximately 900 gallons. It was reported the vessel had approximately 500 pounds of salmon on board. The cause is under investigation.

Stay bear-aware
A black bear rummaging through trash in a Palmer neighborhood was killed by law enforcement officers last week, highlighting the need for safety precautions:
Store trash inside or in bear-proof containers; Feed pets indoors or clean up excess and spilled food between meals. Store pet and livestock food indoors or in bear-resistant containers; Clean barbecue grills after each use; Take bird feeders down April through October, and store out of bears’ reach. Remove spilled seeds; Keep freezers locked in a secure building.
