Six boats sail Cheechako Cup

By Randi Somers

The Cheechako Cup race run May 17 was the first sail race of the season and had six entries that finished in the following order:
Nereus with a corrected time of 1:28:50; Morning Star came in second with a time of 1:36:29, then Arctica with 1:41:06, Dolphin 1:47:38 Dawg’s Life 1:50:31 and Freedom 2, 1:57:30 so it was a pretty close race.
Times are corrected to account for different capabilities of each boat.
One racer reported that conditions were nearly perfect, with a steady west-south-west wind in the 10-12 knot range. The race coincided with a strong incoming tide. For the first time, the club tried a rally start with all boats starting from anchor. Morning Star announced the start at 1:20 p.m.
The course consisted of a rounding of the green can (west of the Spit) and Gull Island, with marks left to port. A steady breeze, sunny skies and flat water made for a fast course.
The next race is the Sourdough Cup, this Saturday May 24.
