Mariners win at Lumen Christi

Both Homer girls and boys basketball teams took first place at the Lumen Christi Basketball Classic over the weekend. Junior Sheldon Hutt was named the tourney’s Most Valuable Player.

Rowe, Daigle win SoHi scramble
Mariner cross-country skier Brian Rowe bested Kenai’s Fox Michaud by 23 seconds to finish first at Thursday’s Candy Cane Scramble at the Star Trails behind Soldotna High School.
Rowe finished the seven-kilometer freestyle race in 15 minutes, 56 seconds. Lady Mariner freshman Aspen Daigle crossed the finish line in 19:30, edging Kenai’s Mikaela Salzetti by one second to win the girls’ race.
Following Thursday’s race, Rowe headed north to compete in the first Besh Cup ski races of the season on Saturday and Sunday in Chugiak.
He finished 51st in Saturday’s sprint race and 64th in the 15k freestyle competition on Sunday at Kincaid Park. Jan Spurkland placed 66th on Saturday and 65th on Sunday.
In the women’s competition, Megan Spurkland finished 29th on Saturday and 20th on Sunday.

PeeWees take Big Lake tourney

The HHA PeeWee C team tied the Eagle River Mustangs with 1.4 seconds remaining in the championship game at Big Lake, sending the game into overtime. Ethan Pitzman scored the winning goal about 1 minute into OT to lead Homer to the 4-3 win. Pitzman turned a hat trick for the game, with Colby Marion picking up the other Homer goal. Goalie Hunter Warren made 15 saves, while the Homer offense hammered the Mustang goalie with 53 shots on goal.
