The pitter-patter of wet, bare feet announced the return of Kachemak Swim Club’s 2013 swim season with the Turkey Time Invitational at Kate Kuhns Aquatic Center last Friday and Saturday.
Swimmers competed in 56 events, with several events comprising different age divisions. That adds up to a total of 120 races, almost 100 swimmers — and a lot of towels — in just two days.
Kachemak Swim Clubbers racked up a number of first-place finishes, and showed plenty of depth in just about every age category.
Carly Nelson picked up three first-place and one second-place finish in the girls 8-and-under division. Madison Story did the same in the 9-10-year-old division, while teammate Iris Downey earned five top-three finishes. Cheyanne Sadler grabbed four top-three finishes in the 11-12 age category.
And, while Cheyanne Smith’s six first-place finishes in the 17-and-over age division sounds highly impressive, she was the only competitor in her division. That, however, took nothing away from her six strong performances in the different freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and individual medley events.
KSC boys were pretty stingy with the first-place finishes as well. Eight-year-old Luke Nelson picked five of them, while teammate and fellow 8-year-old Lucas Story took two first and two seconds in his races.

Theodore Castellani swam to three first-place finishes in the boys 11-12 age category. He added a second and third-place finish to his swim accomplishments for the weekend. Older brother Leo also turned in strong performances in the 15-16 age category. Leo, 15, took first in the 500 freestyle, and several second-place finishes.
Griffin Downey proved a strong competitor in the 13-14 age division, while Gregory Smith impressed with five firsts and one second in his six races in the 15-16 age division. Cyrus Cowan added three firsts and two second-places of his own.
It was brother against brother in the oldest age category of the meet. James and Mark Nagle, both 18, traded first and second finishes throughout the meet. James grabbed a total of five firsts and one second, while Mark had three firsts and two seconds. The brothers joined teammates Leo Castellani and Gregory Smith to take first in the boys 200-yard freestyle relay. The team combined for a total time of 1 minute, 50.68 seconds.
Other KSC relay winners included the girls 10-and-under 200 freestyle team, boys 8-and-under 100 freestyle relay team and the 11-12 boys 200 freestyle relay team.
