Homer Hockey Association’s Coed Adult Hockey League held their second league night Saturday.
The Red Rockets and the Dark Destroyers matched up first. The game started with non-stop action, as the Destroyer’s Chris Owen scored in the first minute of the game. The Rocket’s Travis Brown answered with a breakaway deke on goalie Michelle Hatton to tie the game at one.
The score volleyed back and forth, with Chris Brown scoring for the Destroyers, followed by Butch Schollenberg and Steve Rich scoring for the Rockets. This gave the Rocket’s a 3-2 lead.
Karen Weston and Jen Jiron both scored early in the second period, continuing the Rockets’ dominance at the net. Things were starting to look dark for the Destroyers, as the end of the second period found them trailing 2-5.
The Destroyers found their stride in the third period, however, starting with a quick goal from Tracey Tillion. Steve Nevak and Sean Hatton continued the scoring for the Destroyers, tying the score at five with four minutes left. With time running out, Destroyer Steve Delehanty found the back of the net to give the Dark Ones the lead.
Excitement built when the Rockets pulled their goalie with only 30 seconds left in the game. Charlie Johnson took control of the puck, and fired off a top-shelf shot that tied the game with less than two seconds remaining.
Goalie Charlie Stewart was named the Most Valuable Player of the game.
The second game of the night was an equally dramatic match between the Blue Blockers and the White Lightnings.
Ingrid Harrald set the tone with a goal early in the first period for the Lightning. Her goal was quickly answered by Blue Blocker Vaughn Duggar, who scored a top-shelf goal.
The first period looked like it would end in a 1-1 tie, until Chris Brown managed to catch the Blue Blocker goalie off-guard and put one in for the Lightning. The period ended with Lightning leading 2-1.
The Blockers dominated the second period with goals by Matt Stineff, Jose Decreft and Jay Cherok. Watching their lead slip away, Lightning’s Dylan Braund took action and scored one for the White team to pull them to within one point.
Leading 4-3, the Blockers in Blue turned up their defense in the third period. Coincidental penalties were given to Chip Duggan and Scott Simmons for roughing at the net. And, just as things started to look hopeless for the Lightning, they pulled their goalie late in the game.
Mike Zelinsky found the back of the net to end the game in a 4-4 tie. Zelinsky was chosen as the game’s MVP.
White Lightning 0-0-2
Dark Destroyers 0-0-2
Red Rockets 1-0–1
Blue Blockers 0–1-1
