HVFD teaches tots about ‘hots’

Members of the Homer Volunteer Fire Department brought Engine No. 2 to Paul Banks Elementary School last week. The department has partnered with Paul Banks Elementary for 30 years to teach and encourage fire safety to students.

Firefighters Elaine Grabowski, Chris Cushman, and Dan Miotke came to the school for both morning and afternoon preschool sessions. They showed the students what a fully geared firefighter looks like, answered questions about their firehouse dog and fire pole and showed the students the tools on their bright green engine.
The volunteers patiently checked students’ Stop-Drop-and-Roll techniques and confirmed that yes, firefighters like icing on cakes, just like everybody else.
“Actually,” Grawbowski said, “firefighters eat a lot!”
