Mariner boys took control of the Panther pool at Friday’s Skyview Invitational. Thanks to some significant help from the Nagle brothers, Homer won 12 of 13 events for a total of 140 points. The next-closest competitor, Seward, had 18 points, while the host Panthers earned 11.
The girls team finished second with 64 points, with the Lady Seahawks picking up 76 points to lead the girls’ competition. Overall team honors went to the Mariners, who combined for 202 points.
After taking the top two spots in the 200-yard medley relay, Mariner Mark Nagle picked up victories in the 200 and 500 freestyle events. His brother James won the 100 butterfly and 200 individual medley, while other brother Remi finished second in the 200 IM and 100 backstroke.
Other first-place finishers include Zane Wilkinson, Gregory Smith and Cyrus Cowan.
In girls’ action, Homer was surprisingly disqualified in the 200 medley relay, but bounced back to pick up two first-place finishes and five second-place finishes. Lady Mariner Angie Cardoza took first in the 50 freestyle and third in the 100 breaststroke. Teammate Lauren Kuhns had consistent second-place showings, taking the No. 2 spot in the 200 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke.
Cheyanne Smith won the 500 freestyle and placed third in the 200 freestyle.
Next week, the Mariners will host the Homer Invitational, with diving competitions taking place on Friday. All swim events will follow on Saturday.
Kenai Peninsula athletes have until November to find their peak for the swimming and diving state championships. They take place in Juneau on Nov. 8 and 9.
