Homer’s Clayton Arndt, 12, swam seven incredible races to lead Kachemak Swim Club in the 2013 Alaska Junior Olympic Championships in Anchorage over the weekend. Arndt picked up three first-place finishes, three second-place finishes and one third-place finish on his way toward dominating the Boys 11-12-year-old Junior Division.
KSC took 10 swimmers to compete in the JO Championships; a four-day meet that hosts nearly 200 events and several hundred swimmers.
Arndt placed first in the 100, 200 and 400 individual medley races. His second-place finishes came in the 50 and 100 freestyle and the 50 butterfly. He took third in the 100 butterfly, and finished third in the individual rankings with 127 points.
Griffin Downey also made a strong showing at the JO meet. The 12 year old placed fourth in the 100 and 200 breaststroke, as well as the 100 IM. He took third in the 50 breaststroke, and finished 13th in the overall point total with 61 points.
Brothers James, Mark and Remi Nagle made a good family showing at the meet as well. James finished fourth in the 100 butterfly and fifth in the 1,650 freestyle in the Boys 15 and over category. He went on to place seventh in the 200 butterfly and ninth in the 400 IM.
Remi Nagle picked up two sixth-place finishes in his 13-14-year-old division, while brother Mark finished eighth in the 1,000 freestyle.
Theodore Castellani grabbed an eighth-place finish in the Boys 11-12-year-old division of the 200 backstroke, and Cyrus Cowan placed 12th in the 200 backstroke. Cowan competed in the 15 and over division.
Lauren Kuhns was the only female KSC swimmer to compete at the JO competition. She swam strong in four preliminary events in the Girls 13-14-year-old division, but failed to qualify for the finals.
This weekend, KSC swimmers will compete in the Sprint Championships at Kenai.
