Fat biker James Stull of Anchorage took first in this year’s Homer Epic 100-kilometer race on Saturday, finishing in five hours, 33 minutes and 24 seconds. Stull, age 37, beat his next closest competitor, Josh Chelf, by six full minutes.
The first female biker to cross the finish line was 35-year-old Heather Best of Fairbanks. Best finished in 6:16.44, and finished eighth overall.
Fairbanks resident Mike Kramer, 45, was the first skier to cross the finish line. He completed the race in 6:53.53, some five minutes before second-place skier Lars Spurkland. The first female skier to cross the finish line was Aubrey Smith of Wasilla. Smith finished in 7:09.35, less than two minutes ahead of Homer skier Heidi Herzog.
Dugan Greenwood, also from Anchorage, left the rest of the running field in the dust, as he finished the 100k on foot in 10:48.10. He completed the race a full 11 minutes faster than next-closest competitor Thomas Burton, also from Anchorage.
Most of the extreme athletes came from the Anchorage area, with the exception of three Outsiders traveling from New Jersey, Michigan and California to compete.
That was the case of former Homer resident and Tribune writer Jill Homer, who was the fastest between the field of two women runners in the marathon challenge. The 33-year-old Homer, now hailing from Los Altos, Calif., generally has a penchant for fat bikes. This time, however, she chose to hoof it, finishing with a time of 19:53:40. Keri Hull of Anchorage brought home the red lantern award as the final finisher, coming in at 22:47:26.
Other semi-local finishers included: Josiah Freeman, 34 of Port Alsworth. Freeman finished 13th overall on bike, completing the race in 6:52:12. Ninilchik’s Todd Boonstra, 50, was the eighth skier to cross the finish line. His time was 7:25:39. Megan Spurkland of Homer was right on Boonstra’s heels, skiing to ninth place 7:34:07.
Homer bikers Martin Renner and Marc Romano finished in 7:58:22 and 8:05:56, respectively.
Kelli Boonstra of Ninilchik finished her 100K ski with a time of 9:28:20, while biker Jay Boyer came in at the 11:31:38 mark. Joe Martin, 57, also of Homer, finished his epic bike ride in 19:27:14.
