• Mariners host Seahawks on Friday for Senior Night, final home game
By Sean Pearson
After leading for most of the game on Friday, the Homer Lady Mariners watched their conference win over host Cordova slip away in the final minutes, falling 34-35.
Homer led 11-7 after the first quarter and 19-15 at the half. But their six-point, fourth-quarter lead disappeared in a late Wolverine rally and left the Lady M’s with a disappointing loss. Tayla Cabana had 16 points for Homer.
The Lady Mariners turned the tables on Saturday, rallying in the second half to chip away at a Cordova 12-point halftime lead. However, the Lady Wolverines refused to give up control of the game, and outlasted the Lady M’s 35-31. Cabana picked up seven points for the game.
Homer’s junior varsity girls won both of their games against Cordova on Friday and Saturday.
The Homer boys also looked strong early on Friday, jumping out to a one-point lead after the first quarter. Cordova turned up the heat in the second period, however, and took a 23-17 lead at the half.
Down by six, Homer continued to struggle with scoring, and allowed the Wolverines a 12-5 run in the third quarter that took the wind out of Mariners’ sails. They fell 32-51 to Cordova in conference play. Senior Sam Reinert again led his M’s with 21 points, putting up a fight in the paint for each basket he earned. Sheldon Hutt added 12 for Homer.
By Saturday, the Mariners apparently decided they’d had just about enough of their frustrating losses, and hammered Cordova 45-29.
Reinert had 11 points for Homer.
