Sparked by a 52-point, three-day performance by Naniella Dorvall, the Nikolaevsk Lady Warriors defeated three opponents to bring home the Nenana Invitational Tournament title over the weekend.
Nikolaevsk opened the tourney with a solid 64-34 thrashing of Minto on Thursday. Dorvall scored 28 points to lead the way, followed by Serafima Kalugin with 10.
A 22-5 first-quarter run by the Lady Warriors sealed the Lady Mooses’ fate early. The win moved Nikolaevsk to a semifinal match-up against Su Valley on Friday, where their first-quarter dominance continued. Nikolaevsk held Su Valley scoreless in the first quarter, racking up 20 first-half points for a 20-5 lead at the break. The second half didn’t get any better for the Lady Rams, and Nikolaevsk moved to the finals with a 50-26 win. Dorvall scored a game-high 16 points, followed by Kilina Klaich with 11.
Saturday’s championship game against the host Nenana Lynx was a bit tougher for the Lady Warriors, but not enough to keep them from going undefeated for the tourney.
The Lady Lynx kept up with Nikolaevsk for much of the game, trailing 37-38 after three quarters. A 15-5 Lady Warrior run in the fourth quarter shut down any Nenana momentum, and Nikolaevsk took the game 53-42. .
The Lady Warriors spread their scoring around fairly evenly, with Sophia Kalugin topping the team with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Teammate Kayla Stafford picked up 11 points, followed by Klaich with nine, and Serafima Kalugin and Dorvall each adding eight. Dorvall also helped out on boards, pulling down 11 rebounds.

Nikolaevsk Boys

The Nikolaevsk boys saw much of the same success throughout the tourney — until the championship game.
The Warriors opened the tourney with 62-37 trouncing of Tri Valley, thanks to a 24-point performance by Blake Klaich, and 21 points from Eric Mametieff. The Viking Warriors led 13-7 after one quarter of play, but a smothering Nikolaevsk defense kept them to only 14 points over the next three quarters.
The Warriors moved on to face the Huslia Moose in the semifinals. Again, the magic number for Nikolaevsk was 62, as they easily handled Huslia’s defense for the 62-45 win. Anatoli Fefelov led the Warriors with 17 points, followed by Mametieff with 16 and Yakunin with 14.
In the boys championship game, the Minto Lakers edged the Warriors 45-42. Nikolaevsk trailed 24-16 at the half, and their 26-point second-half run came up just a little short.
Mametieff topped the Warriors with 16 points and 14 boards, while Klaich and Yakunin each added 12 points.
Lady Warrior Naniella Dorvall was named the tournament’s most valuable player, while teammates Sophia Kalugin and Kilina Klaich were named to the All-Tournament team.
