If the intensity and skill level of this year’s girls junior varsity basketball squad is any indication of things to come, the future of Lady Mariner Basketball looks awfully bright.
Madison Akers, Tayla Cabana and Aurora Waclawski combined for 104 of the Lady M’s 139 points to lead the Homer JV squad to first place in the Grace Christian School JV Tournament over the weekend.
The younger Lady Mariners kicked off the tourney with a 38-28 win over Anchorage Christian School JV on Thursday. Homer led 20-16 at the half, but used an 11-2 third-quarter run to shut down the Lady Lions.
Waclawski scored 15 points to lead the way for the Lady M’s. Cabana and Akers added 9 and 8 points, respectively.
The win moved the ladies to a Friday match-up against the Bartlett JV. The game opened in what looked to be a blow-out for Homer, as they outscored the Lady Golden Bears 19-3 in the first quarter.
Bartlett regrouped in the second period, scoring 14 points to Homer’s 4, and closing the gap to 6 points at the half.
The Lady M’s came back strong after the break, picking up 15 more points and widening their lead to 18 going into the final period. A fourth-quarter Lady Bear surge was not enough to overcome the Homer lead, and the Lady Mariners picked up the 47-36 win.
Cabana was high scorer in the game with 17 points. Akers added 11.
Saturday brought Homer to the championship game against tournament host Grace Christian.
The Lady M’s continued their dominance, outscoring the Lady Grizzlies for a 30-14 halftime lead. Grace Christian never got any closer, as Homer defense shut them down and snagged the tourney title with a 54-28 victory.
Akers scored a game-high 22 points for the Lady M’s. Cabana added 10, and Megan Gee logged 8.
Koplin and Waclawski were named to the All-Tournament Team.
“I think our opponents underestimated us,” said Homer Coach Connie Akers. “We jumped out to a quick lead in each game and held it.”
Akers said she was happy with the team’s rebounding, defense and scoring against both zone and man-to-man defenses.
“Our biggest weakness of the tournament was fouling,” Akers said. “We picked up 24 infractions against ACS and 21 against Grace. ACS could have won the game Thursday from the free throw line, had they made their shots.”
The Lady Mariner JV vowed for revenge against a formidable Nikolaevsk team in a Tuesday afternoon game, but results were not available by press time.
