Drew Turner was recognized as the Youth Artist of the Year. The Homer senior competes on the high school’s Drama Debate and Forensics team, is a musician in the Zimbabwe Marimba Band and has worked for Pier One Theatre every summer for many years, either as an actor or volunteer.
Turner distinguished himself to win HCOA scholarships sending him to the Sitka Fine Arts Camp for the fourth time this summer. He plans to major in electrical engineering or physics at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and wants to maintain an artistic focus as a lifetime goal.
Marian Beck was chosen as the 2012 Artist of the Year by Homer Council on the Arts. Her award was accepted by Roberta Highland.
Beck was born in Seldovia, attended school in Homer and Juneau and then went on to study art at Cal Poly University and the Arts Students League in New York. Art has been a part of her life since childhood – especially being mentored by her mother, well-known artist Dianna Tillion.
Beck is known especially for her versatility and experimentation in different media, and has had solo exhibits in Homer, Alaska Pacific University and Hawaii. She received awards for her work in fiber, sculpture, watercolor and oil painting. Her work has been purchased by the Pratt Museum, the Alaska State Art Bank and the Rasmusson Foundation, as well as more individuals than we could count.
