• Anchorage Comets streak by Homer’s Bantam team 4-0 to take tourney title
By Sean Pearson
The Homer Glacier Kings took second place overall in the Bantam Hockey Tournament they hosted at Kevin Bell Arena over the weekend. Four teams turned out to battle for the top spot, but it was the Anchorage Hockey Association Comets Hanson who dominated tournament scoring and came away with the win.
The Glacier Kings opened play on Friday with a 2-1 win over the Kenai Peninsula Hockey Association. Garrett Butcher and Woape Huffman each scored a goal for Homer, while goaltender Riley Swanson turned away all but one shot to squeak out the win.
In the second game of the night, the Comets Hanson punished the South Anchorage Hockey Association Mighty Moose 8-1.
The win pushed the Comets into the winners’ bracket and a Sunday championship showdown against the Glacier Kings.
After opening with a strong combination of speed and aggressiveness in Friday’s win, Homer skaters looked a bit weary and sluggish as they squared off against the Comets Sunday morning.
The Glacier Kings got off to a slow start, falling behind 0-2 in the opening period. And, while Homer skated fairly well and turned up their defense in the second period, the third period was much like the first.
Several Comets skated past Homer’s bushed Bantam defense, with two more Anchorage players finding the back of the net to give them the 4-0 win.
The Homer Bantam Glacier Kings comprise: Troy Anderson, Tim Blakely, Garrett Butcher, Lauren Cardwell, Woape Huffman, Dimitry Kuzmin, Marley McGuire, Charlie Menke, Hunter Tillion, and Danny Wiest. Riley Swanson tends goal.
