Skiers brave frigid temps at Homer Invitational

• Lady Mariner squad takes third

The Mariner cross-country ski team hosted its annual Homer Nordic Invitational on Friday and Saturday with 3-kilometer and 6k races at Lookout Mountain.
The Mariner girls clinched a third-place overall finish with a team time of 2 hours, 23 seconds, thanks to top-10 finishes from Barae Hirsch and Cassidy Soistman. The Grace Christian Lady Grizzlies finished first, capturing four of the top five places.
Hirsch finished fifth in the 3K loop, coming in at 8:30. Following Saturday’s 6K race, Hirsch’s combined time of 27:43 moved her to sixth. Soistman finished seventh in the 3K, just five seconds behind teammate Hirsch. She would finish the weekend in seventh as well, turning in a combined time of 28:13.

In boys’ competition, Homer finished sixth with a combined team time of 1:42:50. Soldotna boys won with a team time of 1:29:48.
Brian Rowe was the top Mariner finisher, skiing to second place in Friday’s 3-kilometer skate race in 6:24. After combining times from the 3K and 6K races, Rowe’s time totaled 21:41 and he wound up sixth overall.
Mariner skiers will take some time off for the Christmas break, before returning to practice for a Jan. 11 appearance at the Skyview Invitational in Soldotna.
