Homer singer/songwriter Heidijo Smith has launched a Kickstarter fundraiser with a goal of reaching $5,000 for a recording session in New Orleans. The clock is now ticking toward a Nov. 27 deadline when the Kickstarter campaign ends.
A series of piano performances for the public begins Friday at AJ’s Oldtown Steakhouse and Tavern. “Sneak a Peek of Heidijo,” is a series of four concerts, continuing Nov. 13, 23 and 27. All shows are from 6-8 p.m. at AJ’s.
Heidijo quickly joined with other performance musicians when she moved to Homer four years ago. She has played at Bunnell Street Arts Center and the Down East Festival this summer. She also was showcased with Johnny B at AJ’s, and with the burlesque shows at Alice’s Champagne Palace.
Heidijo spent much of her life perfecting her musical talents, starting on piano at age 6. Her day job is as a nurse at South Peninsula Hospital, and she has served as an itinerate nurse in Anchorage, rural Alaska and other parts of the country. Heidijo moved from Sacramento, Calif. to Homer with her partner, Kevin Kreitz, after falling in love with Alaska.
Along the way, Heidijo enjoyed a rich musical career, but had not yet found an opportunity to cut her own CD. That’s about to change, as she is booked for a recording session in New Orleans in December. Her back up is the jazz group Egg Yolk Jubilee.
“It’s a rare and wonderful opportunity to record with them,” she said. “I think recording this album in New Orleans fuses my style. I will finally get to occupy the space I have always dreamed of. Musically, I’ve been working on a solo career since 2004, but music.
Heidijo’s career as a nurse helped her pursue music without being totally broke.
“I was able to focus on what I wanted to focus on. I’ve been a long time coming into my own, working on my songs and getting them to a place where I feel comfortable playing them in public,” she said.

Reviewers describe Heidijo’s style as “a distinct, unique voice as singer and songwriter (who) encourages us all to develop our authentic voices in full honesty.”
Musician Lindianne Sarno has said of Heidijo, “A rare bird has landed among us.”
Heidijo describes her style as “provocative, unruly lyrics with melodies of jazz/blues variety.” Her inspirations include Dr. John, Laura Nyro, Black Keys, Diana Krall and Billie Holiday. Initially classically trained, she pursued gospel and then jazz and blues.
Heidijo invites the public to come and listen at AJ’s, and/or participate in spreading the word about her Kickstarter project fundraiser that ends Nov. 27.
