• Well-matched teams tie 3 of 4 early season games
By Sean Pearson
Homer’s co-ed hockey league was out in full force Saturday night with four teams looking to pick up that first win of the season at Kevin Bell Arena. Full rosters and the high energy of early season play made for some fast-paced and competitive games.
First to square off on the ice were the Tighty Whities and the Orange Crush ‘em. Both teams started quickly and hammered the puck with numerous shots on goal. However, only Kristen Brown was able to find the back of the net, giving the Tighty Whities a 1-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Orange Crush ‘em returned with a vengeance in the second period, thanks to Vaughn Duggar’s top-shelf goal in the first minute. Teammate Mike Lowe followed up quickly with a goal of his own to put the Crush on top 2-1.
Once again, it was the women who were able to pull up the Tighty Whities, retaliating with a beautiful backhand shot by Leslie Slater. This knotted the teams at two going into the third and final period.
A strong Crush rush saw Vicki Lowe push the puck past Tighty goalie, Lydia Brown for the 3-2 edge. It looked to be all Orange as the final minutes ticked off the scoreboard. With little time left on the clock, TW Steve Rich turned a breakaway into a goal, and tied the game 3-3. The two teams were unable to sever the tie in a shootout because of time restrictions.
The second game of the evening turned the Dark Defensemen against the Green Goons, setting up an exhibition of some mad hockey skills on the ice.
The Dark Defensemen turned a strong offensive effort into a quick goal by Steve Nevak minutes into the first period. Chris Brown of the Green Goons answered, leaving his defensive position to score a top-shelf goal with minutes left in the first period.
A flurry of activity in the second period produced nothing, as both teams held their positions and shut down scoring. Goalie Lydia Brown faced a plethora of pucks and denied each one.
Goon Andrew Snella took a tricky assist from Leslie Mastik in for a third-quarter score, giving the Greenage the advantage once again.
It was short-lived, as Matt Stineff deked the goalie with some fancy puck work to score one for the Dark side, and force a tie for the second time that evening.
The Dark Defensemen lead the league standings with a 1-0-1 record.
League organizer Ingrid Harrald said the season is just getting started, so anyone interested in playing should feel free to jump right in.
“We always have room for more,” she said. “This is a great opportunity for skaters of all levels.”
