Following a sound Friday-night home-thrashing of the Houston Lady Hawks, Homer’s varsity volleyball team stumbled against a smaller Cordova squad on Saturday in four games.
According to Lady Mariner head coach Beth Trowbridge, serving is what made the difference.
“As a team, we served at 94 percent against Houston,” Trowbridge said. “Against Cordova, we served at 84 percent. We missed a lot of serves overall, and many were at key times in the match.”
Things didn’t start out that way.
Homer’s junior varsity team kicked off the day’s winning, downing a Houston JV squad in two sets, 25-9 and 25-21. The varsity followed, edging the Hawks 25-23 and 25-19 in the first two sets, and closing the door on any Houston comeback with a decisive 25-15 win in the third set.
Senior Haley Oliver led the Lady M’s with 11 kills and five solo blocks. Teammate Kayla Hutt added five kills, a solo block and two service aces on her way to 100-percent serving for the night. Hope Hudson, also a senior, picked up nine assists, eight digs and two services aces. Caroline Decreeft added seven assists and eight digs.
Homer’s winning ways picked up right where they left off, as Friday’s momentum carried the Lady Mariner C-team to a 25-16, 25-22 Saturday morning decision over the Cordova Lady Wolverines.

Homer’s JV team continued the Lady M’s trend toward victory, outlasting the Cordova JV 22-25, 25-21, 15-12. That trend went south, however, as the Lady Mariner varsity squad fell in four close sets, 23-25, 22-25, 25-20, 24-26.
“The girls played hard, played very good defense and were consistent with their hitting,” Trowbridge said. “Blocking was very good and communication was better. The Cordova match could have ended very differently if we had been able to focus on our serves.”
The Lady M’s host their annual “Play Like Crazy” Community Volleyball Tournament on Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. The Alice Witte Alumni Challenge Match will follow at 6:30 p.m.
