As with most seasons of cross-country running at Homer High School, there generally isn’t one particular standout runner who steps up to grab the spotlight with consistent first-place finishes in every meet.
That in no way, however, implies that any of our Mariner harriers lack talent; they just prefer to pick up their wins a little more subtlety.
Homer runners swept the Class 1-2-3A races at the Palmer Invitational on Saturday, picking up team victories in both the boys and girls competitions.
Aurora Waclawski once again led the pack for the Lady M’s, finishing third in the 5k race with a time of 20 minutes, 53.7 seconds. Her time was just 16 seconds off the pace of first-place finisher Macala Fifield of Monroe.
Barae Hirsch helped out the Lady Mariners’ cause with a fifth-place finish in 21:09.1.
Pedro Ochoa and Connor McCarron continue to provide consistent top-five finishes in cross-country competition. Both turned in times of 17:15.8, placing fourth and fifth, respectively. Glennallen’s Arlen Mossgrove took the top spot with a finish time of 16:53.9.
This weekend marks the start of postseason competition, as the M’s travel to Skyview to compete in the borough meet this Saturday.
