Habitat hypocrisy needs remedy

Prior to the Kachemak Bay Parks Advisory Board meeting on Sept. 17, I was asked to present on behalf of the Personal Water Craft Association of Anchorage, advocating on their behalf. I was late arriving at the meeting, and arrived in the middle of a slide show. After the PWC Association presented, only then was I informed that the public could speak only if “representing a group.”

Letters – Oct. 26

No to aerial wolf hunting I am writing in regard to proposal numbers 35 and 36 which would allow aerial wolf control in Units 15A and 15C. I see no biological justification for aerial wolf control in either game management unit. In Unit 15A, research has shown that poor habitat quality is affecting the nutritional [...]

Peninsula frogs studied for limb deformities

By Jenny Neyman Redoubt Reporter What’s worse than being a frog — a major link in the food chain and a creature that’s acutely susceptible to deformations from exposure to contaminants or other changes in their environment? Lady M’s continue to polish rough edges

Homer Volleyball Coach Beth Trowbridge doesn’t measure the success of a season by her team’s win/loss record. She holds her Lady Mariners to a much higher standard.
“We didn’t win a set on Friday, but I can honestly say we played some of the best volleyball that we have played all season,” Trowbridge said of Homer’s first day of competition in Anchorage over the weekend. “It’s amazing how that works sometimes.”
Homer’s varsity and junior varsity teams traveled to Anchorage on Friday for a Dimond/Service Tournament that Trowbridge called “one of the biggest of the season.”

Perk pushes wrestlers past pain, pressure

Well into their 2011 season, the Mariner wrestling team picked up a few gridiron grapplers from Homer’s State runner-up football team as they traveled to Seward for the King of the Mountain Tourney.
Homer’s mat men went up against Nikiski, Skyview, Grace Christian, New Stoyahok, Cordova and Barrow in the tournament that divided 14 teams into two pools. Seven other schools competed in a second pool that most of the Mariners did not get to see, as they did not advance to the finals.
Juniors Mark McGregor, 160 pounds and Dylan Williams, 220 pounds, were the exception to that rule. Both placed first in their pool and advanced to the finals.
