­­Friday performance to blend music and wildlife

Andres and Navino Condon will perform nature-inspired music and Persian poet Rumi’s works accompanied by a slideshow of wildlife photographs taken by Mary Frische and Tom Callopy at the Alaska Islands and Ocean Center auditorium starting at 8 p.m. Friday.
Asia Freeman of the Bunnell Street Art Gallery arranged for the appearance and provided information about the Condons, supplemented by a Tribune interview with the pair at the Islands and Ocean Visitor Center Friday.

After-school youth theatre skills training slated

The Homer Council on the Arts and Pier One Theatre are collaborating to hold after-school youth theatre training courses this school season.
A 12-week program called “TheatreShakes” will start September 7, with instruction being held Wednesdays at Homer Council on the Arts. The goal of this program is to develop basic theatre skills and perform a short version of William Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” with Brenda Dolma directing. No experience is required and any experience level is welcomed, according to a press release. The focus is on middle school age students but any interested child may register. A minimum of 12 students is required for TheatreShakes.

First Friday openings showcase variety of arts

Everything from knitting to a totem made from computers expresses a wide range of artistic talent at the First Friday receptions for September shows this Friday.
Homer Council on the Arts is featuring Native artist and musician Patrick Lind with his Alutiiq and Aleut carvings, paintings and jewelry at their First Friday reception and show opening, 5 to 7 p.m. this Friday. At 7 p.m. Lind will present a slide show discussing the Aleut and Alutiiq cultures and the early explorer Alphonse Pinart.

Volleyball team takes third in tournament

The Homer Mariner Volleyball team took third place in the Shayna Pritchard Memorial Tournament this past weekend beating Nikiski 16-25, 25-18, 15-10.
Dillingham took first and Anchorage Christian Schools took second. Homer players Brooke DeVaney, Monica Davis and Lauren Cashman were selected for the All-Tournament Team.
Head volleyball coach Beth Trowbridge relayed these results from the tournament this last weekend. Homer began the tournament in a pool with Anchorage Christian Schools and Kenai, who played each team two games to the score of 25 on Friday for tournament seeding.

Second Annual Run For Leo a Success

In the second annual K-bay 5k Run for Leo held Friday, all ages showed their support for Leo Ogle, and other children with neurofibromatosis. According to the Children’s Tumor Foundation, NF is a genetic disorder of the nervous system that can cause tumors to grow on nerves anywhere in the body, including the brain and spinal cord. It can lead to blindness, deafness, chronic pain, disfigurement, learning disabilities, bone defects, cardiovascular problems and cancer.

Wolfe wins state coaching award

Voznesenka wrestling and football coach, Steve Wolfe was nominated for the national coach of the year award by the Alaska State Coaches Association, one of the highest honors a team manager can attain on the national level.
Wolfe can claim hundreds of team members during his 36 years as a football and wrestling coach.

Mariner swim and dive teams place second

The Mariner Swim and Dive Team had a good weekend,placing second in a five-way meet with a score of 94 for the girls’ team, and 109 for the boys’ team.
The swim team has been training since Aug. 8, and according to swim coach Anna Borland-Ivy, the training is paying off. “We have three kids who are brand new to the team, and brand new to swimming. I’m very impressed with their progress and they already feel like they are part of the team,” she said.
