• noon- 2 p.m. Calvin & Coyle Nature Trail. Come out for free family fun and food to celebrate the completion of improvements to the Calvin & Coyle Nature Trail. The celebration will include guided fun and educational activities along the trail for kids and adults, with picnic barbecue fare at the trailhead. The Kachemak Bay Birders’ third Saturday birding trip
• 8 a.m. June 18 to Mossy Kilcher’s Seaside Farm to observe and learn about Homer’s nesting songbirds. Seaside Farm is 4.5 miles out East End Road, just past Wasabi’s. This trip is cosponsored by the Kachemak Bay Birders and the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge. The leader will be Betty Siegel and for more information, call 235-1598. There is no charge and everyone is welcome to attend.  There is some parking at the top of the hill.  Please don’t block driveways.

Upcoming

A blood drive will take place in the LIFEmobile on June 23 and 24 in the Homer Safeway parking lot, sponsored by South Peninsula Hospital.  Donors are reminded to eat well and drink plenty of fluids before donating.  Please bring photo I.D. which includes birthdate or social security number.  Appointments are encouraged – call the SPH lab at 235-0338 to make your appointment.  Hours are June 23 from 10am-5pm, and June 24 from 9am-1pm.

Registration for the 2011 Spit Run is now open at www.sphosp.org  or in person at the Community Recreation office at the high school from noon – 8pm.  The 10K run is set for Saturday, June 25, starting at 10pm at the Homer High School and ending at Lands End at the tip of the Homer Spit.  The event is a fund raiser for the Homer High School running programs.  For more information contact Mike Ilg at 235-6090.

Save the Date! Bayview Park Work Party
• Join Families First & volunteers at the Bayview Park Work Party on Saturday, June 25, 10a-4p. Bring your rakes, shovels, wheelbarrows, and buckets! Fun for the whole family!! Child Care is available.
 
Families First and parent volunteers have joined with the City’s Parks & Rec department to improve Bayview Park and address issues of safety, install new equipment, and make the park more toddler friendly.

Families First: A Best Beginnings Partnership has received grant funds from Alaska’s Best Beginnings to purchase a new slide and boulders for the park. Parent volunteers, through their own sweat and donations from local businesses, will also be installing two wood bridges, log balance beams, stepping “logs, and an alder fort.
 
Parents are also working to raise funds to purchase 2 new toddler swings, one of which would be adaptive for a child with disabilities.

SEEBIRD CAM
• All day, Every day this summer, Marine Gallery. Live video broadcast of nesting seabirds from Gull Island.  Visitors control the camera for close ups of common murres, kittiwakes, puffins, cormorants, glaucous-winged gulls and their young.
