New era in Cook Inlet

Homer will catch sight of a large vessel this weekend in Kachemak Bay, if all goes as planned for the heavy lift ship, the M/V Kang Sheng Kou. After many years of no new drilling in Cook Inlet, the jackup rig freighted by the Sheng Kou is to set to work on a particularly promising [...]

Obama ‘birthers’ waste of time

During the first months of Barack Obama’s presidency a conspiracy by an amorphous group who came to be called “birthers” raged on the Internet and right-wing talk radio. The birthers claimed that President Obama really wasn’t born in Hawaii, but in Africa, making him ineligible to be president of the United States. The controversy went nowhere until Donald Trump recently reopened the issue making it the curious cornerstone of his bizarre, short-lived Republican presidential bid.

Take inventory after ‘rapture’

Roll call — are we all still here? Any empty piles of clothes found in the breakfast cereal aisle, or suddenly driverless cars careening off the road Saturday? Any missed meetings that couldn’t be explained by Seinfeld reruns or the fact that it was decent barbecue weather? Sunny skies bless Saturday’s Torch Run

About 50 people gathered at the base of the Homer Spit bike trail at 10 a.m. Saturday for the Law Enforcement Torch Run and Pledge Drive for Special Olympics Alaska. Walkers, runners, joggers, bikers and even one wheelchair joined the fun to help keep the flame burning for thousands of Alaskan athletes with disabilities.

The owner of the boom truck, Cecil Cheatwood, was outside the truck operating the extension, and wasn’t injured.

Errors again bring baseball team down

It wasn’t a great weekend for Homer in baseball.
Kodiak defeated Homer in a home game Friday night 11-0 in five innings. “Overall, we looked a little better on defense but couldn’t get a lot going,” Coach Lary Kuhns said. “We’re still making too many errors on defense. We’re a very young team in the process of gaining valuable experience and I expect that within a few years we’ll be back to contending for a Region Three championship.”
