Students test bridge limits The 8th grade science students at Homer Middle School completed a bridge project as the culmination of Jennifer Booz’s physics units. Students apply their knowledge of forces, mass, tension and stress to build a bridge out of toothpicks and must adhere to strict guidelines to try for a bridge that will [...]
The Alaska holidays sometimes confuse residents because we get some repetition in theme, though different reasons for what the holiday commemorates. Seward’s Day, Monday, was a legal holiday that falls on the last Monday in March. It commemorates the signing of the Alaska Purchase treaty on March 30, 1867, and is named for then-Secretary of [...]
I am writing to clarify some questions that have arisen as a result of the March 9 Homer Tribune article about Cook Inletkeeper’s monitoring program and the signs at Bishop’s Beach regarding dog waste. Inletkeeper, with funding through the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation’s Beach Grant Program and help from local volunteers, has been monitoring marine waters at Land’s End and Mariner Park since 2008, and at Bishop’s Beach since July 2010. While fishing, shellfish collection, and tide-pooling have been long-established uses along our local beaches, there’s been a steady increase in surfing, kayaking, paddle boarding, kiting and other forms of recreation that bring people into contact with our bay. In response, our local monitoring efforts are part of a national program aimed at protecting public health at recreational beaches.
New library architect, Brian Meissner of ECI/HYER, wrote an interesting Point of View in the Homer Tribune last week. First I ever heard that “the previous library was… a sick building.” What architect designed that? The measure of good builders is not how many screw ups we make, but how we fix them. We don’t need excuses; we need to figure out how to fix the new building’s problems and avoid more. Tried and true systems, better methods. Some say, about the library design that it is not as bad as the Alaska Islands and Ocean Visitor Center down the street.
Watch messages to children about worth Seems to me that a community such as ours, one that rallies around just about every good cause out there from cancer to impoverished families, would rally around the future of our world. Our kids. What will it take to get people to understand some things about the Boys [...]

Now that spring is here, you may find it easier to get outside to run, bike or take part in other physical pursuits that you enjoy. As you know, the more active you are, the more efficiently your body will work. And the same can hold true for your investments: The more exercise they get, the more potential to work on your behalf.
