‘Green’ may not mean public savings

Before other public buildings enter into construction designs set by the U.S. Green Building Council, Homer citizens are advised to look into a controversy brewing in a national lawsuit.
The Homer Public Library was built according to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design standards set by the USGBC. And now, as the Pratt Museum Building Committee looks at general design concepts for a new museum building, the LEED standards are under consideration for adoption.

Homer gains new public transit plans

Feasibility didn’t pencil out to gain a bus service for Homer residents, but the town should see public transportation soon.
The Homer City Council passed a resolution Feb. 15 in support of reduced cab fares within Homer and the acquisition of two wheelchair-accessible vans to be available round the clock. The program is expected to be in place by June 2011.

Officials lobby for raw fish tax

A redistribution of the Fisheries Business Tax could net the City of Homer $800,000-$900,000 a year, if amendments to a current law get passed by the Alaska Legislature.
The process has just begun as one of the top tasks assigned to the city’s new lobbyists, Linda Anderson and Yuri Morgan. The first step is to build a coalition of support from towns in coastal areas that would also benefit from the tax restructure, City Manager Walt Wrede said.

Mariner basketball hangs with Palmer teams

The Mariner men’s basketball team fell to Palmer and Colony in both home games this weekend. Despite the losses, the team continues to make huge strides as they prepare for the Region III, 4A Basketball Tournament.

Bantams Win Invitational The Homer Hockey Association Bantam team won the Presidents Day Invitational Tournament in Anchorage over the weekend. Homer beat the Mat-Su Eagles 7-0 in the opening game Saturday morning and then tied the Fairbanks Phantoms 3-3 Saturday evening. On Sunday morning, Homer defeated the Anchorage Comets 1-0, advancing them to the semi-finals. [...]

Reach toward a rockin’ time

Rock climbers of all ages and levels gathered at The Bay Club last Saturday for the Homer Wilderness Leadership Climbing Competition, where advanced, lead, intermediate, and beginner levels brought 24 climbers to the indoor wall to showcase their skills.

Mariner nordic boys team wins gold medal

The Mariner boy’s nordic team won an exciting photo finish victory at the 2011 Kenai Peninsula Borough Cross Country Skiing Championships at Tsalteshi Trails in Kenai last weekend.
The meet consisted of two races, a 5k classic race with an individual start on Friday, followed by a mass start 10k skate race Saturday. Homer High School competed with 11 other teams throughout the region.
