Recycling isn’t garbage

A sad commentary came to light during Kenai Peninsula Borough Mayor Dave Carey’s visit to Homer on Friday night. Despite the great pride this community takes in recycling efforts, there is a daunting obstacle course to navigate before we can proceed further. Of the 10-40 tons of solid waste dumped at the Homer Landfill per day, surely far more of it can be reused than what occurs.

Alaska’s future needs charting

Since the election I have been asked repeatedly about my intentions for the future. My answer is that the outcome of a single election does not alter my passion to advocate for the best interests of Alaskans.
I have congratulated Gov. Sean Parnell and I am hopeful about the opportunities he has before him to put Alaska’s economy back on track.

Much to rejoice in civil rights

How is domestic tranquility to be preserved when the prevailing moral authority sets population against population, as Arizona’s Gov. Jan Brewer did by falsely accusing one population, Mexicans, of beheadings in the Sonora Desert? Sweet Jesus, so much for moral authority; so much more for our Republic. Have we no more a sense of collective responsibility, of collective repugnance? Or is it that we dwell now in a vacuum?

Alaska fishermen’s wives get own reality show

A casting call is out for Alaska women to star in an Animal Planet reality show.
“The name of the show we are casting is Alaska Fishermen’s Wives,” said Annette Ivy, casting producer with Shed Media US in Los Angeles. “We are looking for a kind of flip side of Deadliest Catch, and that would be the fishermen’s wives and their lifestyle. We’re interested in the stresses and challenges they go through when their husbands are out at sea and they’re left holding down the fort.”

Peak of food cycle makes speed bumps of eagles

The snowshoe hare population is once again at its peak, and it’s fairly common knowledge that when hare numbers go up, so, too, do the numbers of lynx and other animals that see hares as food. But not all species are benefiting from trying to get an easy meal.
“We’re getting multiple bald eagle casualties a week,” said Todd Eskelin, a biological technician at the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. “We’ve had 14 hit in the last three weeks, and some of the people who called in a casualty said they saw six other eagles sitting right there.”
