Finding the $12 million to close the Homer Landfill will involve careful timing with back-up plans in case the state isn’t willing to help, and the process depends on local support to help argue the case.

Bill Strutz wanted to make his children happy, but weekend trips to Alyeska to snowboard weren’t in his budget. To compromise, he bought a rope tow to board down a hill on their Ohlson Mountain property.

The Mariner men’s basketball team fell to the Kodiak Bears in both home games this Friday and Saturday. The final score Friday was 48- 75. Saturday’s score was 50-78.
The Mariner’s fought hard, but Kodiak’s exceptionally strong team combined with injuries on the Homer side made for two tough games. In Friday’s game, the Bears got a quick lead on Homer and ended the first half up 19-30. After the break, the Bears came back in full force, scoring 26 points in the third quarter.
In anticipation of the Pebble Project progressing to the mining stage, a Homer planning commissioner proposed banning industrial products from crossing the Homer docks.
Homer Planning Advisory Commissioner Roberta Highland put forth the idea at a planning work session Jan. 19 from among 40 proposed amendments to the Homer Spit Comprehensive Plan. “No transshipments for major industrial products or hazardous waste” should be allowed at the port, she said.

When landowners decided to build their homes on sloping cliffs, the City of Homer had few laws to regulate construction rules on how far back they set the home from the edge or how steep the slope can be.
The Homer City Council remedied that in an ordinance passed at Monday night’s meeting that amends Homer City Code to a tighter definition of how far to set back buildings. The steeper the slope, the more set-back would be required.

A tax break has created a wealth of work opportunities within the film industry, statewide, and for Homer and experts are giving several ways communities and individuals can be ready to work with this growing industry.
In 2008, Sen. Johnny Ellis spearheaded a tax credit for film and video projects in Alaska. By applying to the State of Alaska Film Office, production companies who spend at least $100,000 in a 24-month period qualify for a base credit of 30 percent, and up to 44 percent if they film in rural areas, hire local crews, or film between October and March.
