Sea yields unique products for technology

During the season of gift-giving, don’t overlook the gifts from the sea.
Sponge Bob, for example, is set to be the next rage in fiber optics. Researchers at Bell Labs have found that the sponge euplectella grows glass fiber networks that are far more advanced than any found in today’s telecommunications industry.

Ring in some new year’s financial resolutions

Now that 2011 is almost here, you may want to make some New Year’s resolutions. Planning to volunteer? Go to the gym more often? Learn a new language? All worthy ambitions, of course, but this year, why not add some financial resolutions as well?
Which resolutions should you make? Here are a few ideas to consider:

Winter bird count tallies Asian lark, vulture

A new record was set in the annual Kachemak Bay Christmas Bird Count with 67 species tallied by a new record number of participants, a day that dawned sunny and cold.
An Asian subspecies of Horned Lark was among the day’s biggest surprise – a lark now sitting on the wrong continent far from its normal migration route. Another migrant, the short-eared owl, spotted on the Homer Spit and likely feeding on voles found in grasses, proved a rare sight. By now, this owl species should be further south, said Dave Erikson, a Homer resident who has helped organize or participated in the Christmas bird count since the 1970s.

New devices by Homer inventor prevents fires

In January of 2005, Lyle Chesley and his family came home from a day long outing to find their house burned to ashes, a fire caused by an overloaded circuit breaker box.
Chesley had been out shopping when his neighbor called to tell him his house was on fire. He thought the neighbor must be mistaken until he actually got home to see that the fire had completely consumed his house. The fire was caused by a type of meter base that has since been outlawed. Chesley immediately suspected the meter base as the cause, since he had previously replaced one after it caught fire.

‘Goodie’ ways to say thank you

There’s a special kind of magic infusing kitchens this time of year, bestowing the power of speech upon various combinations of flour, sugar, butter, eggs, spices and flavorings.
What goes in the mixing bowl may be any old recipe for cookies or candy, but what comes out of the oven, gets packaged into brightly colored tins and delivered to various friends, family and acquaintances, becomes a way to say, “You are appreciated.”

Enstar gas line talks flowing

One of the first tasks for the newly-funded City of Homer lobbyist position likely will involve seeking financing for the Anchor-Point to Homer gas line.
Talk of how to gain a long-wanted natural gas line for the lower Kenai Peninsula is renewed in these closing days of 2010. Enstar Natural Gas announced, as of the end of this year, it no longer will have firm contracts to receive all the gas it expects to need for its home and business customers in Southcentral Alaska.
