The Share the Spirit season is upon us in Homer. It’s a chance to participate in community events and spread the warmth of the Homer holiday season.
Events of Share the Spirit raised more than $15,000 last season and served 171 households, which meant caring for about 600 people. That dollar amount didn’t include the gifts people bought from ornaments on the Giving Trees or the 32 families that were adopted out for special Christmas giving from other families, said Shari Daugherty, longtime organizer of Share the Spirit.
David Waldal is particularly thankful this year for the good companionship of his part-husky, part-lab dog named Yankee.
“I got him from a litter at Safeway – they were giving them away in front of the store. He was born around Thanksgiving, but I didn’t get him until Christmas,” Waldal recalls. The awkward, bouncing black pup soon became a familiar sight around town, waiting patiently while his master fixes windshields for a living.

A dozen Mariner Mat Men took the 1000-mile adventure to the Top of the World to compete against host Barrow, Anchorage Christian School, Grace Christian, Kodiak and Sitka over the weekend.
The Mariners dueled in three matches on Friday night and entered an open, double-elimination tourney on Saturday.
On Friday night, the Mariners lost to Sitka 46-36. Larry Croft — wrestling up a weight class— pinned Chattam Connor in one minute. Croft was giving up nearly 60 pounds in the match, but was able to stay on top of Connor and put him away. Mitch Wyatt also picked up a pin, while three other Mariners won by forfeit. In an exciting dual that featured pins by first-year wrestlers Phil Haunschild and Harley Wells, Homer edged host Barrow 40 – 39.
The Homer Mariner Hockey team turned up the heat in Kevin Bell Arena over the weekend, going 3-0 and winning their End of the Road Tournament.
The M’s got off to a strong start against a junior varsity team from Kenai, blasting them 17-1. Kai Simmons led all scorers with five goals, while Carson Duggar turned a hat trick. Dennis Sanarov and Mark Reutov each picked up two goals, while Alex Sanarov, Asa Stage, Vladmir Kalugin, Tommy Bowe and Erik Rosencrans each picked up a goal. The M’s spent a total of 8 minutes in the penalty box.
Budget questions continue as the Homer City Council explores ways to cut expenditures, and now the mayor is warning that Homer needs to explore increasing the alcohol and cigarette taxes as one way to patch dwindling revenue gaps.
Mayor Jim Hornaday gave a brief speech at the Homer City Council meeting Monday night warning that, in the coming weeks as the 2011 budget is finalized, he will be looking into a measure to make tax increases.
In an effort to support the vegan code, which is to not use anything which involves the harming or exploitation of animals, I’ve decided to forego the whole turkey thing this year and stick with a strictly animal amiable menu. The tofu turkey was easy enough. What I’m still trying to figure out is where to draw the line on the whole vegan thing. To me, the vegan lifestyle relies on vegetable profiling and unjustly implies that vegetables are functionally incapacitated, therefore placing them lower on the evolutionary food chain. Can you honestly say you’ve never felt the slightest bit guilty biting into a baby carrot?
Have you noticed all the hustle and bustle around town? Northern Enterprise boatyard is full to the gills with boats needing repair and services for the next fishing season. Many merchants are running hard to keep up, hiring extra help to accommodate the work generated by the fishing fleet. Kachemak Gear Shed’s parking lot seems forever full.
