The Homer Mariner football team tied for third place with Eielson in the final standings of the Alaska School Activities Association small schools championships. I knew Kostas (front page story) when he was in Shirlie Gribble’s sixth-grade glass at West Homer Elementary School. Kostas was a handful of energy and mischief, with a sly, crooked grin that he often flashed when he got into trouble. I’m pretty sure he completed the D.A.R.E. Program in fifth grade with my daughter. In the seventh grade, he made the honor roll.

It’s no treat to be tricked by scary investment moves
If you have young children, or even if you just have some in your neighborhood, you know they will soon acquire large amounts of free candy, obtained by impersonating witches, vampires and other scary creatures. As an adult, of course, you’re unlikely to encounter too many monsters after Halloween ends. Yet as you go through life, you will find some things that are truly alarming — such as scary investment moves.
Homer first in state to complete MAPP
The goal to help people eat healthier foods may sound lofty, a height unreachable beyond the mountains of preferred french fries and decadent chocolate desserts.
Yet, there it is – proof that already certain segments targeted for diet makeovers in the Homer population are eating healthy brown rice, locally grown salad stuff and protein beyond the “pig, cow and chicken” choices.
Local man charged in drug conspiracy
According to United States Attorney Karen Loeffler, Kostas Nikolaos Bairamis, 22 of Homer was indicted by a federal grand jury in Anchorage on one count of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine and heroin. Governor candidates square off
The governor’s race focuses on differing philosophies about what can be done to start-kick the economy from its slump.
Democrat Ethan Berkowitz has campaigned on a series of plans he calls the Alaska Ownership Stake, including one that offers a chance for individuals to buy into a piece of the future gas pipeline. Incumbent Gov. Sean Parnell points to the four planks in his administration for his campaign: creating jobs, strengthening families, calling for an end to domestic violence and creating a scholarship program.
