The Homer Electric Association Board of Directors defined the direction it will take in redesigning our cooperative’s rate structure at the Aug. 18 ratemaking workshop. There appeared to be 20 to 25 HEA members in the Homer office and three in the Kenai office for the event. Kudos to those of you who took time to attend or who expressed your thoughts at the previous night’s HEA Board meeting.
As an Alaskan and a fisherman, I must register my sincere displeasure at the lack of leadership of late from our two U.S. senators. Alaskans and their economy face an imminent threat from climate change and ocean acidification, yet Sens. Lisa Murkowski and Mark Begich appear to prefer the easy playfield of partisan politics to the hard work of writing significant energy policy for our future.
Goodbye to a good friend I wish to say a public goodbye to my friend David Tomaszewicz. He lived with his wife, Janet, in the home they built, along Barabra Creek near Seldovia. We became friends and shared cups of tea and coffee, stories and first trips to Alaska. His was on a bicycle he [...]
Timely as today’s headlines about the economic crisis, Pier One Theatre’s final play of the season humorously brings home working people’s woes as inflation and unemployment squeeze them beyond their means to survive.
Although Dario Fo wrote “We Won’t Pay! We Won’t Pay!” in Italy during a previous economic collapse, it clearly resonates in today‘s world. The 1974 play is a farce centering on women taking what they want from a supermarket and only paying what they could afford — or not at all.
Instead of heading for a warm beach or an amusement park this summer, Homer residents Kirsten Swanson and Casey Parrett spent two weeks in July as volunteers on a construction project in the Northern Nicaraguan village of LaRioja.
“It was quite an experience,” Parrett said. “The work was hard, but it was rewarding because we were helping the people here in the area. All the members of the team were great and it felt like family. I loved the kids, and I brought home the happy memories of their laughter and smiles.”

The Homer Lady Mariners kicked off the 2010 high school volleyball season with their annual Jamboree over the weekend. Teams from Nikiski, Seward, Skyview and Kenai joined the M’s in play, with Homer’s JV stepping up to the varsity level to make an even six teams for the tournament.
Teams played a round-robin format on Friday night, and then were placed in brackets for Saturday according to their record in the round-robin match-ups. Based on their Friday play, Homer, Skyview and Seward all advanced to the gold bracket. Nikiski, Kenai and the Homer JV moved into the silver bracket, with all three teams tying with a 2-3 record.
Some games are more difficult to lose than others.
This was one of those “others.”
When you’re playing former state champs from a very strong program, you have a tendency to cut yourself a little slack.
When the Soldotna Stars jumped out to a quick 13-0 lead by the second quarter, things were starting to look a little sketchy for the Homer Mariners.
Apparently, they were just warming up.
