The generous actions of the North POacific fishing groups described above will have an even greater impact than they might anticipate. Isla Robinson Crusoe, where the fishing community of San Juan Bautista is located, is the exclusive home of the Juan Fernandez Firecrown, a hummingbird that is on the Critically Endangered list. Saving the bird is primarily being accomplished by restoring its habitat, a forested area that has been invaded and devastated by several exotic plant species. The majority of this work has been performed by the residents of the community, some volunteer and some paid. They have been enthusiastic about protecting their unique hummingbird, found nowhere else in the world. Helping the residents to resume a normal life will allow them to resume helping this unique hummingbird. So the Hummingbird Society applauds the help which the North Pacific fishing groups are providing to their brethren on Isla Robinson Crusoe.
