It’s that time of year again where we show our appreciation for our taxi cab drivers and all they do for us in our community. Driving taxi in Homer is probably one of the more interesting jobs, but also one of the more thankless.
Many people aren’t aware of what the job of a cab driver entails: For instance, many people think cab drivers get an hourly rate from their employers; not true. Some fares take excess time giving drivers the runaround, or call for a cab and then cancel once they arrive. And some people just don’t have money when they reach their destination. Drivers do not get an hourly wage of any sort.

Investing in future generations of fishermen

Sitka is doing something a lot of fishing communities spend a lot of time talking about — investing directly in future generations of both fishermen and fish.
Through a newly formed Alaska Sustainable Fisheries Trust, Sitkans are able to invest in independent, community-based fishermen who are committed to conservation, and reward them through the marketplace. Funding comes from the Oak Foundation, an international philanthropic organization.

Grapplers gear up for State Wrestling Tourney

In their final tournament before next weekend’s state championships in Wasilla, the Homer Popeye Wrestling club welcomed visitors from as far away as Cordova to the Homer Middle School this last weekend. Popeye wrestlers dominated the field, placing first out of nine teams and winning a total of 36 medals.
A competing tournament in Fairbanks the same weekend drew some of the teams normally attending Homer’s event, but nearly all Kenai Peninsula teams participated.

Anchor Kings work toward State
