Huskies ‘living on the edge’
Homer Middle School skiers dominated the Kenai Peninsula Borough Middle School Ski Championships in Nikiski last month. The Huskies took on five different schools and brought home 10 medals for their top-10 finishes in the 4-kilometer race.
Brian Rowe led the way for Homer, taking the top spot in 11 minutes, 57 seconds. He was just ahead of Quinn Daugharty and Ghen Sasakura. Seven Huskies finished in the top 10, with Porter Livingston pulling in fifth place, Miles Cullenberg, sixth and Joshua Vantrease in seventh. Only three seconds separated them. Kaec Brinster also roared from the back of the pack, passing numerous skiers, to snare ninth place.
On the girls side, Homer had three top-10 finishers. Madeline Gerard came home with second place, just 15 seconds off the winning pace of Soldotna Middle School’s Sadie Fox, who finished in 14:24. Husky Cassidy Soitsman came in fourth place, followed by Taylor Iredale-Sharp in fifth. Mattea Peters finished just seven seconds out of the top 10.
“These kids have worked hard all season, and the results speak for themselves,” said Homer Coach Kenton Bloom.
Other Homer finishers include:

16. Morgan Kelly; 17. Molly Bowen.
Boys

Irish Spring Splash and Dash
Join eager runners from all around Homer for the first foot race of the year. Runners will hit the streets this Saturday, celebrating both St. Patrick’s Day and the start of spring. Weather permitting, athletes will run a 4-kilometer course, with a few “tasks” to perform. Unless the weather commands differently, the race will start at Lighthouse Village at the base of the Spit at 11 a.m. It will finish around 1 p.m. at Two Sisters for hot coffee. If you want to park at Bishop’s Beach, you’re sure to catch a ride out to the Spit. Come out, run a bit and catch up on your summer race plans.
Race starts will be arbitrarily adjusted depending on the color and style of your outfit. Imaginative and creative outfitting will be rewarded. Wearing orange is frowned upon.
