Skiers keep clawing their way up

• Homer finishes second, fifth at Colony cross-country competition

Homer skiers took to the trails up north against some 200 high school racers at Colony High School’s two-day cross-country ski competition over the weekend.
The Homer girls varsity took second place overall, while the boys team took sixth.
Lady Mariner sophomore Marie Schmidt led the way for the varsity girls with a sixth-place finish in the 3 kilometer competition on Day 1 with a time of 10 minutes, 40.7 seconds. She finished 14th in the second day of events, coming in at 21:52.2 in the 6k race.
Maggie Bursch was Homer’s top finisher in the 6k competition, posting a time of 20:59.9. She finished eighth in the 3k.
Other Lady M’s making a strong showing at the meet were Kaya Morelli, and Frances Bursch, as well as Carla Mueller, with her second and third place finishes in the girls junior varsity competition.
In boys’ action, Andre Lovett held on to top-10 finishes in both the 3k and 6k races. Lovett, a sophomore, finished ninth in the 3k race, coming in at 9:30.1. He placed 15th in the 6k, finishing in 18:15.6. Parker Sorensen, Kevin Rowe and Tux Seims also turned in strong performances in the boys’ varsity races.
On the JV side, Dan Adickes led the young pack of skiers fifth and 13th-places finishes in his races. Jake McLean also turned in top-25 performances.
Homer skiers travel to Fairbanks this weekend for the fifth and sixth races of the Besh Cup Series.
