Lady Mariner skiers finish fourth at Regions

• Homer qualifies 12 skiers for State meet in Fairbanks

Homer sisters Maggie and Frances Bursch led the Lady Mariner cross-country ski team to a fourth-place finish at the Region 3 Nordic Skiing Championship at Tsalteshi Trails on Friday and Saturday.
Maggie finished the girls varsity races in eighth place with a combined race time of 38 minutes, 16 seconds, while Frances finished at 11th with a combined time of 39:37.
The Lady M’s continued to finish strong, with Kaya Morelli and Alaine Miller rounding out the top 25.
Homer sophomore Andre Lovett was the top Mariner finisher, placing 18th with a combined time of 46:45 in boys’ varsity action. Parker Sorensen finished at 28th, with a time of 48:42, and Kevin Rowe rounded out the top 30 with a time of 49:29. The Homer boys’ team finished sixth overall.
For many skiers, this meet was their last chance to qualify for the state meet. Homer will send 12 skiers to the Nordic Skiing State Championships this weekend at Birch Hill in Fairbanks. The team includes: Maggie Bursch, Frannie Bursch, Kaya Morelli, Marie Schmidt, Alaine Miller, Denali Critchett, Andre Lovett, Parker Sorensen, Kevin Rowe, Tux Seims, Dylan Critchett and Kyle Wentz.
Coach Paul Gutzler commented that senior Tyler Wentz skied in his last meet as a Mariner over the weekend.
“Wentz was new to skiing this year and was a strong, steady senior influence on the team,” Gutlzer said.
