During some of the coldest weather yet this winter, the Homer Glacier
girls 16-and-under hockey team, traveled to Anchorage to grab a few games.
The 15-member, all-Homer team ranges in age from 13 to 16. They opened play Dec. 19 against the Shooting Stars at Dempsey arena in Anchorage.
It was to be the winning game of the weekend.
Homer’s Glacier girls out-skated and outscored the Stars 3-0, with the highlight of the game coming from the LaRue sisters, who combined for three goals.
Maggie LaRue, the youngest player on the team, scored one goal, while older sister Hannah picked up two.
A Sunday morning game in Eagle River against the two-time defending state champs in the 16-and-under division found the Glacier girls a little overmatched. Later that afternoon, they fell to the 19-and-under Firebirds, despite a long and hard fight.
Homer Glacier girls started their practices in early October, and – other than scrimmaging against the Homer women’s team – the weekend was the first games the team had played this season.
Homer will put in a few more trips to Anchorage for weekend
games before sponsoring a home tournament. The season will culminate with the team participating in the State Tournament in March.
The Glacier girls team crosses traditional age boundaries by joining junior-high and high school girls together on one team. They all learn a lot from each other, as some of the older girls are newer hockey than a few of the younger ones.
The team is led by Coaches Chip Duggan and Andy Kita, and Manager Blake LaRue.
