Pratt opens with ‘Big One’
Galleries at the Pratt Museum reopen to the public on Tuesday, Feb. 2 with a special exhibit of “The Big One: Earthquakes in the Pacific Northwest,” from 5-7 p.m. The public is also invited to attend our annual meeting featuring refreshments, special speakers, board elections and volunteer recognition. Winter hours are noon to 5 p.m., Tuesday-Sunday.
Marimba Madness comes to Alice’s
At 7 p.m. Friday, the Homer Council on the Arts will host a fundraiser for at Alice’s Champagne Palace, featuring four local Marimba Bands: Tamba Hadzi, Zuva, Shamwari and Rufaro. Patrons will dance to the Shona Music of Zimbabwe. Cost is $15 general or, $10 for those 18 and under. Family rate for the event is $40 for a family of four. Tickets are on sale at the Homer Bookstore and HCOA.
Start shooting birds
The deadline for submitting photos to the annual Shorebird Festival Amateur Photo Contest is Monday, May 3, by 6 p.m. There are three categories: Alaska wildlife (not just shorebirds), Alaska scenic and Alaska human interest. The overall best-of-show entry wins $300.
Monetary prizes are awarded for first place in each category; ribbons are awarded for honorable mentions and the People’s Choice winner. Entry forms are available at NOMAR, 104 E Pioneer, 235-8363 or at the Homer Chamber of Commerce visitor center at 235-7740. All entries will be on display at NOMAR from May 7-31.
Rasmuson deadline approaching
The deadline for Alaska artists to apply for Rasmuson Foundation Individual Artist Awards is approaching. Project awards of up to $5,000 will be awarded to support short-term projects that have a clear benefit to the artist and development of their work. Fellowship Awards of $12,000 are available to mid-career and mature artists in specific artistic areas. One distinguished artist award of $25,000 will be given to a mature Alaska artist. The postmarked deadline to apply is March 1.
Boxing with Margo

Boxes: Are they functional containers or holders of treasures? In this workshop, the box itself is the treasure. Workshop participants will construct hinge-lidded boxes, cover them with Japanese handmade paper and embellish them with decorative details both inside and out.
