Agencies mum on Chevron violations

After executing searches of Chevron’s Trading Bay Production Facility and Granite Point Tank Farm on the west side of Cook Inlet via Blackhawk helicopters some two weeks ago, officials with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency continue to redirect calls for information regarding the extent and significance of the violations to the Department of Justice. Calls to the Department of Environmental Conservation were met with the same redirection.

Welding accident claims young Homer man’s life

Joey Tholberg loved heavy equipment. The 29-year-old Homer resident was working at the job he loved as an equipment operator and mechanic for East Road Services last Thursday afternoon, when a loader bucket he was welding rolled over onto him.

Remembering Marsha Million: boat captain, bootmaker

Marsha (Million) Hopkins, one of the first water taxi operators in Kachemak Bay, died Friday, Jan. 8 at The Ark of Homer after battling Frontotemporal Dementia and breast cancer.
Marsha’s ashes will be spread later this summer on the waters of Kachemak Bay, where she made her living. A gathering of friends and family will be held at 3 p.m., Feb. 6, at Land’s End.

Laundry, chickens and a post office

In summer, tourists often show up at the Homer Post Office smelling heavily of fish slime to mail their laundry home.
“They would rather mail their laundry home and pack their fish on the flight,” recalled Maryann Lyda, who worked 25 years for the Homer Post Office. For most of it, she was the town’s first home-delivery mail carrier.

Fixing city hall goes to Juneau

The City of Homer still has $1.5 million left over from its failed quest two years ago to gain a new city hall/town center.
In order to use that money for another project, the city must ask the Alaska Legislature to re-appropriate it for another designated project.
