Fighting off a well-seasoned team of alumni that easily represented … well – a good number of years of experience, the varsity Lady Mariners finally succumbed in Saturday’s annual alumni game at Alice Witte Gymnasium.
“It was a great game, and a great atmosphere,” said Homer Head Coach Deb Lowney. “I thought the kids came out and played hard again, and showed little intimidation toward a very experienced alumni women’s squad.”

Funding for various fisheries and projects has been penciled into the state’s budget for next year.
Last week, Gov. Sean Parnell unveiled the proposed budget for the 2010/2011 fiscal year, which begins July 1. For the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, the operating budget request is $188.6 million, including general fund and federal dollars, 4.1 percent higher than the current budget.

Earlier this week, Homer Police arrested two suspects in connection with the theft of a police officer’s handguns, badge and other associated police issued accessories from his personal vehicle. And while Homer Police Chief Mark Robl indicated that many of the officer’s stolen items have now been recovered, the two handguns remain missing.
Anastasia K. Leach, 18, and Taw Wayne Farrow, 20, both of Homer, were each charged with two felonies for second-degree theft and tampering with physical evidence. Leach was also charged with a misdemeanor of tampering with or damaging a vehicle.
Ever wonder what can be done if a certain street lamp just won’t shut off in the middle of the day? Or how much it costs for the lone electrical outlet at WKFL Park that only gets used a few times a year – such as plugging in the community Christmas tree?
Apparently, sorting through the answers to those questions is a relatively lengthy process. But now, thanks to a 193-page report resulting from an expansive study by Deerstone Consulting, the city has the answers.
This year’s Christmas bird count revealed two distinguished visitors making rare appearances around Kachemak Bay. A mountain bluebird was found feasting on ash berries out East End, while an emperor goose hung out with crows along the Homer Spit.
Those, along with 59 other bird species were counted Dec. 19 amid blowing snow by 20-25 bird loyalists.
