Sporting a new parking area and a freshly groomed course, Homer High School cross-country skiers welcomed a number of Kenai Peninsula schools to their annual Homer Invitational Ski meet on Ohlson Mountain over the weekend.
“Despite the two feet of snow that settled on Homer during the recent blizzard, the grooming and trail crew at Lookout Mountain was able to create a beautiful 3k course for Friday’s race,” said Homer Head Coach Megan Corazza. “The Lookout Mountain trails are some of the most technically challenging in the state, and many of the skiers from all over the region got to experience their first ski race ever in Homer.”
Kenai’s Travis Semmens and Kailey Mucha won the men and women’s varsity races, with Homer’s Kevin Rowe coming in at eighth place. He was followed by Tux Seims in 10th.
“Tux has moved from being one of Homer’s top JV skiers, to placing second on Homer’s varsity team,” Corazza said. “He has obviously made some significant improvements over last year.”
On the girls’ side, sophomore Maggie Bursch had the top Homer time in the varsity race, placing fourth. She was followed by her sister, Frances, who came in sixth overall.
Corazza said the boys JV team also did exceptionally well, placing four boys in the top 10. Sophomore Dan Adickes led the charge, coming in second, followed by Kyle Wentz in third. In the girls JV, sisters Emily and Katie Schmidt had a very strong showing, finishing second and eighth, respectively.
On Saturday, Homer skiers demonstrated their strength in skate skiing, placing Maggie Bursch at third in the women’s varsity race, and sophomore Kaya Morelli in seventh.
According to Corazza, Morelli, who mostly skied JV last season, shows great potential this season.
In the boys’ varsity competition, Lovett, a sophomore, placed fifth overall, taking the top spot for the Homer squad. Lovett was followed by Rowe in seventh.
In the girls’ JV, Emily Schmidt crossed the finish line in first place, while foreign exchange student Carla Mueller came in third in her first skate race ever. The Mariner boys’ JV also dominated the course, with Kyle Wentz coming in first, followed by Dan Adickes in third.
Next up for the Mariner skiers is the Lynx Loppet at Kincaid Park in Anchorage beginning Friday.
